Being Jewish and living in Brooklyn, this article caught my attention. I watched the news on TV then decided to research it online after hearing that the suspect was caught using Face recognition. In the book, “The Filter Bubble”, by Eli, Pariser, we learned that Google and an Israeli company have configured a tool that can be used to recognize a face by using 14 individual’s picture to match a person. Personally, I find it ironic that the suspect was an anti-Semite and it was an Israeli software that was used but happy that he was caught for this crime of hate.
Do you think that the face recognition tool should begin to be used to solve crime?
Do you think that the face recognition tool should be used by the public?
It is pretty cool that the face recognition system can be used to solve crimes. And I think the technology can be very useful as long as it’s only used to solve crimes. It would be a disaster if this technology is used in public. This system can be misused in many different ways, leading to other serious crimes. I remember that Facebook once added a face recognition feature a couple of years ago and a lot of angry and horrified users complained because there were numerous privacy issues.
I do think that facial recognition should be used to solve crimes, it seems like a low-cost effective tool that would save people a lot of time and yield great results but I think that there will have to be strict regulations placed on such a system and I don’t think that everyone should have access to it, such as Google Glass.
Personally I do feel that the facial recognition tool should be used to solve crime, but to an extent. There should many guidelines and rules that follow this tool if it were to be used by the public. If this recognition tool were to be released to the public without having any guidelines to follow, I feel that it would be a complete disaster. People would use this tool for the wrong reasons. Limitations must be implemented in to something such as this, just like everything published is limited.
I think face recognition would be a great tool to use to solve crimes. If it helps to catch a criminal faster and in an accurate manner I don’t see why it shouldn’t be used. We live in an unstable world, where anything can happen and in this case technology is making us more secure. Im opposed to it be used by the public, because not only can it fall into the wrong hands but using it for another purpose besides solving a crime would be too invasive into people’s lives. Overall, I think it’s great for the police to use it but not for the public.
