The Generation Gap

As children we want to rebel. We gain pleasure in disobeying our parents and getting into mischief. At least I was when I was little. We did things that we thought we could get away with. Such things as sneaking sodas, or hiding my greens etc. Children used to use Facebook as their medium to communicate when they believed that they could say whatever they wanted without their parents finding out. However, more and more parents are joining Facebook and the children no longer have a secret medium to communicate so they are shying away from the prying eyes of their parents on Facebook to other more secretive methods of communicates such as WhatsApp.

The fact that older family members (parents included) were joining Facebook and amongst other things, I decided to deactivate my Facebook page. I could’ve simply ignored their friend requests but then I would have to deal with them friend-ing me again or seeing them somewhere and asking me why I didn’t answer their request, so I decided to avoid an awkward situation and just delete it once and for all. Although I relapsed a couple of times, after a couple of weeks I was fine without it. Facebook who? I do have to admit that submerged myself into Twitter and Instagram even more but I enjoy those types of social networks far better than Facebook, they’re simple and much less invasive and above all no older family members.

Its funny how young kids are sort of creating their own “code languages”, going far beyond 2-4 letter acronyms to where a two or three digit number will mean something only meant for the “inside” to know.

I have been a facebook user ever since myspace started to die off and its the only social media I use. I guess maybe its the lack of time due to school and work constraints, but I find facebook to be an accurate timeline or diary of my life (what I wish to publicly display) and as a “cloud storage” for many of my pictures. There may be some bad things of what I did earlier, that my parents may stumble upon as I write this comment, but if some content is really that serious, its possible to delete. Im sure if most of my friends leave facebook for instagram, I would definitely do the same.
