The three things I learned during this course were:
- How to use the database:Before this class I was never introduced to the database and wasn’t good in searching, except if it was in Google. I learned a lot because of the basic step by step routine we took. I have one more year left in school and I can honestly say that I mastered my skills in using the database. Now I know for sure, whenever I will have a paper to write on some topic for my future classes, I will not be worried and be very appreciative of this class.
- Filter Bubble:The book and everything we went over regarding to the Filter Bubble, opened my eyes to what reality is like, now that technology is part of our daily lives. It took a while for me to understand some of the concepts but reading the book and even every exercises we did in class, broadened my ideas on the good and the ugly of the social media. I think now I can honestly say that I will be very careful with the information I provide on the internet, and how social media affects my future. As for the future classes, this may be very useful for me because I am in Public Affairs and it is always great to be very knowledgeable of what is going on in our technological society.
- Presentation:For some the presentation was just any other presentation they did in class. To me it was a battle with my own mind. I did presentations before but was never as comfortable to present as I was in this class. Professor, I appreciated the fact that you were very caring about my issue and that was all I could have asked for. For my future classes I can honestly and proudly say that this presentation helped me in some way many may not understand. It made me be more comfortable on my own skin, and I learned that I am capable of working in a group with amazing people.

Well, well! I am not suprised, According to this article YouTube announced to Financial Times that it was “looking into creating a subscription platform that could bring even more great content to YouTube for our users to enjoy and provide our creators with another vehicle to generate revenue from their content, beyond the rental and ad-supported models we offer”. Hm I love how everytime any social media site mentiones of their members to start paying for somethig, according to them it is all done for “our benefit”. YouTube was always humbling, because it was free. You can search for anything and enjoy limitless time throughout your day. They are saying that ” the subscription-only videos will include up to 50 YouTube channels”. For now it will be “only” 50 YouTube channels, in the blink of an eye it will broaden to a 1000 and before we know it the whole YouTube community will be functioning through paid subscriptions. Am I overdramatizing this situation? I personally don’t think so, but would love to hear your opinions.

Usually most of my posts and comments consist of negativity towards anything and everything to do with technology but this article I was very happy with. Since I am an Instagram devotee, the new updates are very convenient and beneficial for me and my fellow Instagram addicts. Instagram is adding face tagging! Since every other social network changes their features every other month, it is time for Instagram to add something fun and useful. Sure it is not a deal breaker for our universe, but I never realized that I actually enjoy the feeling of nostalgia towards technology updates ( well some ).
I am not a user of Tumblr nor am I a cat lady, but when I stumbled upon this article I thought to myself, why not share something pleasant with everyone.
Once again our Internet crazed society found something to obsess about, either if it’s a catchy song like ” Gangham Style,” popular dance like ” The Harlem Shake”, now there is a new tumblr alert and trend, this is where cats are compared as lookalikes to male models. Des Hommes et des Chatons, http://deshommesetdeschatons.tumblr.com/.
Check it out.
Ever since we watched the videos in class about the “Google glass”, I became fascinated with the idea but even more obsessed with the parodies. Who would have honestly thought that technology would evolve the way it did over the past decade. I have a little niece, who is almost 3 years old, she already knows how to use a cellphone, iPad, you name it. Adolescents now know how to use these items better than most adults do. It frightens me to contemplate of what our future generation is being raised upon… technology wise. The “Google glass” may even be one of the utmost technologies created so far, but right now I am not adjusting to the idea. I stumbled upon this article http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2013/04/code-in-google-glass-features/ which is summarizing some of the things Google is trying to accomplish. “Google is working on a handful of cool new features for its smart frames, including two-finger touch-to-zoom and winking to take a photo.” Really? I don’t know if I am being skeptical or what the youngsters these day would refer to as “old school”, but I just can not wrap my mind over how lazy we as people may possibly convert into when even the simplest things like taking pictures with our hands may be taken away from our society.
GROUP 1 – Every Day Use
cell phone: Wi Fi, GPS ( directions ), Internet, tv, ipod, ipad: Wi Fi, bus, train, fridge, laptop, clarisonic, toothbrush, remote
GROUP 2 – Rare Use
microwave, stove, flat iron, iron, cash register, computer, phone
Who knows you better, or at least thinks they have a better understanding of who you are, Google or Facebook? Complicated question to answer to since both do a different job of trailing our moves. Facebook knows us by our profiles, which include, friends, pictures, private information, and of course our interests. Google on the other hand only knows us by what we search for, and what kind of news we are interested in. There may be no comparison between Google’s and Facebook’s personalization.
According to Facebook’s founder Zuckerberg ” you have one identity.” Also in the book it states that ” you have one identity, it’s your Facebook identity, and it’s colors your experience everywhere you go.” According to Google “google news, and google’s ads determine the Google’s theory of you.” Both statements offend me because we as individuals are so different, and unique, we have a different variety of personalities, mood swings, pleasures, each of us has a past that nether Facebook or Google knows. They can not base their theory of us just because we like to listen to a certain type of music, or watch particularly news that deal with science. I feel like both aren’t really trying to figure us out, but do the same thing our society does to everyone and that is just ” stereotype.”
Personally I agree with what it says in the book ” The Google self and the Facebook self, in other words, are pretty different people. There’s a big difference between ” you are what you click” and ” you are what you share.”” What they forgot to mention, and I personally think is the basic of our computerized generation is that we are ” our real selves vs our online selves ”
Randomly surfing through YouTube I watched a video of a very popular YouTuber who goes by the name sxephil. A very interesting guy who updates us with all kinds of different news. What caught my attention was the site he mentioned, face detection. The creator by the name of Marko Dugonjic came up with this idea, project, experiment “Realtime Responsive Typography” which detects your face and tracks your eyes while you are reading. It tracks your eyes through your webcam on your computer and it adjusts the font based on your distance. Of course it is done with your permission, but people do not always rationalize accurately, do they? This is an article by Eric Limer, “You’ll Never Squint Again With This Automatically Resizing Font”, he is the one who introduces us to this project.
The conception is to make it easier for people to read whatever it is on their screen, without hurting their eyes. Creepy? I think so, but at the same time, the skeptical side of me argues that it is brilliant , mind-blowing and interesting. What do you guys think? Are you comfortable with the idea that while you are working on your computer the camera tracks all of your moves in order to “help” you, or “trail” you?
We discussed in class about web personalization with sites selling your information to advertisement companies, with google personalizing you news, but this may even be crossing the boundaries to our privacy. It is very frightening and exciting to think of the future, of the capability the computer has.
In order to find the article:
- I had to go to Google and search New York Times
- In the search box wrote Facebook
- Put in the specific dates, 01/28/2013
- The very first article was what I was searching for
- The author of the article is Somini Sengupta, who covers technology issues. She graduated with honors from Berkeley University.
- The people who were mentioned in this article are:
- Loren Cheng, who is a search product manager and “who led what is known as the natural language processing part of the project”. Mr. Cheng’s goal was to provide the comfort of the control for the users considering that all this time everything was done under the computer’s terms.
- 2 Linguists: Amy Campbell and Kathryn Hymes, both of who’s missions were “to teach Facebook’s computers how to communicate better with people.”
- Professor Clifford I. Nass, a professor of communication at Stanford who specializes in human-computer interaction.
The ideas that i found interesting were:
“teach Facebook’s computers how to communicate better with people.”
“and all told, the search engine can recognize at least 275,000 ways to ask about “students.””

"This year I decided to make my mom's present a little different. I did not use technology nor did I purchase anything. I decided to be a little creative and go back to our good old days. I wrote her a simple letter. I wrote it in pen and on a paper. She appreciated that gesture much more because she knew I took the time from my day and actually sat down and wrote everything I was feeling. When she read it, she had the biggest smile and her face, and although she denied it I know that she was getting teary eyed. That made me ecstatic and from now on I don’t think I will use any social media, any digital cards or even Hallmark cards. Sometimes we need to go back to our roots, prior to technology and realize what matters to us and use that in our daily lives."
posted on May 15, 2013, on the post Happy Mother’s Day, Tweeters!"I used to be very loyal to t-mobile, for about 5 years straight me and my family thought it was very convenient for us to use that plan. Until their free unlimited texting and internet usage became not very “unlimited”. We would get bill after bill of our over usage and pay extra money, not to mention that their service wasn’t great at all. We switched to at&t, and that was a horrible mess all together, due to the fact that our family sharing plan wasn’t that sharing. So now we are using Sprint, because of their kindness to let us reuse the minutes and data into the next month. I think every company lies to get customers and to brand themselves as something “new”. But at the end of the day, if we do not have to worry about our “unlimited” service, why do I always have the paranoia to double check my minutes and data use."
posted on May 15, 2013, on the post Unlimited Cell Phone Data?"I would personally not buy that camera. I have two cameras at home, and they were both bought before I owned an iPhone or an iPad. Now they are lying there collecting dust. Whenever I go somewhere I never question myself whether or not should I even bother taking one of them because they are disadvantageous. Considering how phones and tablets are convenient, and their quality improves with every year, it would make no sense for me like Mike said to carry an extra item. The only camera, in my opinion that stands out, is the professional camera. They are unbelievably expensive but I guess you get the results of the price you pay."
posted on May 8, 2013, on the post Canon’s comeback against the smartphone"This is unbearable. I hate the fact that because of the media, bullying became such a big and easy part in our existence. Even a story like that, leads to cyber bullying. It reminds of the situation, where a nurse from Kate Middleton’s hospital killed herself. Although it was a practical joke, that joke led to falsely accusing someone which resulted in a tragedy. Media has so much power to ruin someone’s life. People who posted and wrote about this guy, had dominance over this powerless individual. Most of the people who are behind their keyboards on an a social network or even behind the newspapers have a lot of sovereignty when no one sees them but to step out and apologize, they don’t have the guts. This is so disturbing; it blows my mind, of how evil people can be."
posted on May 8, 2013, on the post Student Missing After Wrongly Accused in Boston Bombing"I think that we are addicted to technology because it is very advantageous for our daily lives. When our parents were younger, I am unquestionably sure to them free time meant enjoying the company of their friends and loved ones, spending time with yourself would be occupied by reading books, in my mom’s case that would consist of knitting or drawing, etc. When I say I am exhausted and want to spend time with myself to isolate myself from the society, it means lay on my bed watch movies and TV shows on my iPad, download music, spend hours watching random videos on YouTube, Facebook and other social networking sites, contradicting my concept of “isolating myself from the world”. I personally think that our generation will agree with me, if I leave my cellphone at home or my iPod at home then I feel deprived and almost naked. Are we obsessed? YES! Is it a bad thing? I guess it all depends on the individual."
posted on May 6, 2013, on the post Addiction to Technology"I totally agree with everything you mentioned. I live in Brooklyn, and have that means I have to take one bus and two trains to get to school. We rely on technology and transportation more then we realize. A couple of weeks ago after the Boston bombing, we were having bomb scares around the State. Mysteriously random packages were popping up around NY. That day, my transportation was shut down both ways; the commuters were not keeping us informed on what was going on. I had no way of getting to school. If I did not have my phone, I would not have an understanding of what was going on. I would not have any capability on knowing how to transport myself from Brooklyn to the city and considering how inadequate some of our commuters are, I had to rely on myself and my Internet. I think everything good comes with the bad, considering how hesitant I am about technology, I was grateful that I had access to inhabit all of the information I needed for that particular day."
posted on May 1, 2013, on the post “Sorry, the system’s down”"I agree with the both of you. Every time a new technology idea comes out, somehow we end up being lab rats for every company, we tend to think that all of that experimenting benefits us but we do not realize that we are compromising our privacy. Everything now is technology based, but I would be a hypocrite if I ever say that I am totally against it. The era we live in today, with different technologies makes our lives much easier and convenient. But once again the Google Glass is something I think we could live without. Everything about it creeps me out. I remember when I visited my country 5 years ago, people still did not own computers at home, had no idea what the Apple company consisted of, only the rich could afford a cellphone, but here in the US most of us, including myself would feel naked if they left their house without a phone or music player. I think it's unbelievable of what humans managed to create within these years but our privacy is something I would consider priceless."
posted on Apr 24, 2013, on the post Congrats we are Behavioral Study Lab Rats!"Usually I ignore these kinds of websites, but my curiosity got the best of me and I attempted to give this a shot. Initially I am very skeptical about any kind of quizzes and surveys’ regarding “our personalities, character, political views, etc” is because we are all dissimilar personalities. How can 5 or 50 questions declare who we are, we are much more than that.
But since I attempt this test, I can say that the accuracy of this test for me was 60%. I was reading my results, and most of the answers had truthfulness to my personality, and I thought that this wasn’t as impractical as I thought but then I stumbled upon the last result “AGREEABLENESS: Assertive and competitive, rather than warm, trusting and cooperative.” Laughably I can express the insult, but I am trying to figure out what information “likes” did they base this upon. So now I can legitimately say that I give up on these quizzes, surveys, etc."
posted on Mar 16, 2013, on the post You are what you like. Or are you?"I agree with the comment above. Not only facebook but any social media site you use does not reflect on who you are. I do not polish my facebook and the idea that I might not get an internship or a job because maybe they dislike what kind of music I listen to, books I read, movies I watch or people I follow.
I am 100% sure that at least every person who has a social media website has a white lie there or there. On the Russian site I use, called "odnoklassniki.ru", me and all ofmy friends lie about our age, we all say that we are either in our 50's, 60's and even 100's, that somehow makes us feel protected. I don't think that our future careers should hold that against us, I would consider that as an invasion of privacy!"
posted on Mar 5, 2013, on the post What Is Your Facebook Identity?"I think that today in our society we are always unsatisfied. People should not be afraid of posting comments and speaking their minds but of course there are people who take advantage of that and start trolling. The weird thing is that I agree and disagree. Whenever I watch videos on youtube, for example, beauty gurus, there will be people who praise that person and then there are people who would say the most horrendous things, and for what? That is just our world!
People who are mean spirited will find anyway to hurt someone online. Sure they feel power by staying anonymous but even though I hate to admit it, can we argue that it is freedom of speech? Then of course you guys might attack me by saying that somehow in a conniving way I support bullying but that is not my point at all.
This topic is difficult for me to answer specifically because I have no idea how I feel. I don't want be naive and think that once people have no power to stay anonymous online everything will be just peachy, with butterflies flying around. It is something that I think will never change, unless in the near future our computers will be tracked and automatically when you post a mean post to someone you get arrested.
I don't know. I wish the world would somehow change, but technology won't change us, only we the people can change us."
