What would I do to stay out of the filter bubble?
Well I would love to say never use the internet again but that isn’t really plausible. I guess i would probably just use broader search terms and maybe even search terms I wouldn’t want to read in the first place. I would probably talk to more people who have different views in order to understand a holistic view on issues. Also, not send any personal information not even for surveys. Hopefully google wont catch my every move, and keep me out of their bubbles! Except Amazon, Amazon can reccomend stuff I like their book recommendations
To begin with I added a few questions to the desired uses section:
“Do you think that there might possibly be use in investing to create a roof for part of it in order to hold events and create a space for inclement weather? This way those tables and that space can be used year round? Vanny makes a great point will this be just another herald square kind of space? Also does it make sense to make some of it a grass ground to give more of a campus feel? I know I would personally love to sit on the grass during my break in good weather and read a book :)”
In Current Amenities I added:
There are now umbrellas in some of the tables (for sunny not rainy weather)
new plants in the side areas for beautification purposes
In Desired amenities:
I think these amenities would be awesome but we would need a larger space in order to fit all these in. And for the smoking section a cover like a roof would be better for both good and rainy weather.
Chapter 8 of the Filter Bubble talks about solutions to all of the problems that were explained throughout the book. In these solutions we see both positives and negatives, some with which I agree and one with which I do not.
The idea of “stop being a mouse” in opinion isnt the best and i definitely do not agree with it because it makes people seem that they should change their opinions and wants. With the wide variety of likes that people have asking them to change them is just not feasible.
The idea of more transparent filtering sytsems are are better but still in my opinion not the best there could be. Currently there are many companies that are already very transparent but still this doesnt help. Making the idea of the filter bubble transparent isnt that much different. People knowing its there doesnt eliminate the problem.
The best solution is the government requiring the companies to give us the people control over our personal information. This is because this give us as people more control about what is out there and this is better because it makes sense that we know more about ourselves than anyone or any other company would know about us.
http://vator.tv/news/2013-04-13-google-picks-up-behavioral-sensing-company-behavio
Yay!! so in order to upgrade and make Google glass practical, Google acquired the company Behavio…this is a company which uses peoples phone signals in order to track human behavior and then make an ‘educated determination’ to predict what we will do next. I used to think all this technology was in order to make our lives easier that was up until I realized what the hell is going on, I kinda want to escape from this world where Im feeling more like a game pawn and lab rat than a person with feelings, thoughts, and ideas. Seriously this Behavio company seems like they are going to make our Filter bubbles even more solid and impossible to break out of or anything new to break into them.
Thoughts anyone? Am I overreacting?
http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9238354/Google_lets_users_plan_their_digital_afterlife
“You can tell us what to do with your Gmail messages and data from several other Google services if your account becomes inactive for any reason.”
“We hope that this new feature will enable you to plan your digital afterlife — in a way that protects your privacy and security — and make life easier for your loved ones after you’re gone,”
Uhm ok, really? This really really got to me, its not enough that they want to control what we see what we buy and who sees us while were still kicking they want to control our ‘data’ after we die? This all seems a little absurd to me. Reading this article doesnt even make me feel human anymore, just another line of 0’s and 1’s int heir computers. What if I dont want anything to happen to my emails when I die, and I dont want there to be an automatic response sent to my friends, and family, my coworkers, my employer.
“Just in case you’re inactive and not actually dead, Google is set to send you a warning via an email to a secondary address, and a text message to your cellphone.”
How nice of them, in all honesty I would love to get a text from google saying “If you are alive please reply by texting “ALIVE” back to this number”…what if I am away and on a lengthy sabbatical for 9 months and change my number? Then according to Google i’m dead? woohoo good to know.
Anyone gonna use this feature? Does this actually make anyone happy to know google offers this?

This article I came across seemed rather interesting, me being obsessed with my Samsung Note 2 I am not even remotely excited about any of the phones listed. When getting the Note 2 i saw the nexus and was not impressed, the samsung 4 that is coming out isnt all that crazy and seems like its open to alot of glitches, and finally the iphone is extremely played out. As a apple veteran I can honestly say the iphones no longer excite me, on the contrary since converting to Samsung I get easily irritated by the limited things that Apple offers. Anyway I thought this was interesting that the google phone wasnt selling as much and that people are waiting for the other two.
Thoughts? Would you wait for the Samsung 4, the iphone “5S”/”6”, or go with the google phone?

Who knows me better, Google or Facebook….well to think that a website knows me personally is a bit of a creepy thought. Maybe its too much ‘iRobot’ thoughts in my head but technology is becoming a tad overwhelming. If i had to chose which site knows me better I think I would have to say Facebook. Though I’m not happy with the fact that FB assumes me to have one identity for all my friends it has a majority-correct assumption on majority of things.
This is probably because when I access Facebook its only me and they see what it is I alone do in my searches, friend requests, events, likes etc. Unlike Google which even though my email is logged in my sister, my mother, my friends constantly ask me to do searches for them and this probably throws in confounding variables of my identity to Google.
This still upsets me because both the social media site and the search engine think of me as a person who has specific interests and don’t allow me to see what else there might be, i am not an ‘island’ and if i was to look at what they see i would hope they “zoom out” and see a bigger picture when it comes to looking at personalization. Pariser is right that the internet skews your identity and doesn’t really see the big picture of your individuality rather than just your identity to a group.
Hey all so I saw this video on youtube and though OLED technology has been out for a while this was the 2013 Samsung CES Keynote speech. The fact that they have working prototypes is pretty awesome and to think that it will be out within the next year or so is exciting. I thought this applies to the Filter Bubble because with technology growing so fast will this just increase the bubble we already live in?
Thoughts?

interesting quotes:
“idealized view of people communicating”
“Facebook works by studying human behavior”
Concept i found interesting!: there is a like no dislike button on fb because “negativity draws people away”….interesting!

"Oh man have I been there before, when I had to get to an express bus and the only train station in walking distance doesnt have a working machine that takes cards, or cash whatever it is I have at the time. Yes we do rely on technology far too much and unfortunately there is nothing we can do about it. With everything running on plastic or on batteries its harder to get by without using the one thing thats really bringing us now."

I use about 12 GB of data a month so true unlimited is a bit of a necessity. After 7 years of Verizon they pushed me out really quick when I said I cannot pay 95$ extra a month for Data, so yeah I get your issues with not keeping loyalty anymore"

I liked hat all you had to put was weight and height so it wasnt too bad but still i dont think the apps are effective because they seem like they are practical for a few days maybe a week and thats all. Afterwards it gets annoying and time consuming. Why upload pictures or share your weight its not something that should be a used to network, like who the heck wants to send a picture of themselves when they are trying to get results with weightless. MAKES NO SENSE!"

This is great I love it I only hope they give us the chance to approve whether we want to be tagged or if we want to untag ourselves for that matter. I was also hoping for the ability to add some new filters but I guess we can wait for that too. I personally like Instagram because it is unlike any other social media site, it has similarities to twitter but it also has many things twitter does not. Being able to search for what i want rather than what they think I want is definitely a huge bonus, and being able to add pictures not just text updates is awesome too, its like they say a picture is worth a thousand words."
posted on May 7, 2013, on the post INSTAGRAM UPDATES"Well wow this was definitely not something I was expecting, honestly it's like they're trying to get every penny people have. It's interesting because I know I personally have spent hours upon hours watching everything from funny cat videos to best NHL fights (don't judge me, I'm a huge Hockey fan LGR!) this is even really irritating because it is the one place people go to to listen to a song they want or even get help with homework for free, that is what has been so magical about youtube, people can post videos of them singing in their living rooms one minute and be on tv the next. Reading this article and your post honestly is upsetting, hopefully someone else can come up with a different scheme for a similar concept for FREE!"
posted on May 7, 2013, on the post Social media will do anything to get into our wallets!"Uhm well WOW. The end picture is definitely fitting. Google seems to be like an mutated octopus that just keeps on growing, and though we use their products daily it also is a bit intimidating that they want to suggest what we SHOULD be searching, Id like to think i have a brain of my own and that i am not interested in becoming a zombie where the internet tells me what i should and should not be looking for, therefore no i would not trust google with the power to be so all seeing to my personal activity, there should still at least be a sense of privacy. This is exactly what the Filter Bubble touches on the power that these moguls have over our wants, they think they have us figured out and in reality if i don't want to be followed around having the same things shoved in my face i think it should be my choice.
I would definitely not trust anyone with the power of making my decisions for me, I think that is why we were born with our own brains with our own ability to separate our likes and dislikes that is why life puts challenges in front of us so we can make our own choices.
This idea definitely angers me but thanks for the great post!"

As a safety measure I believe the black box is a great idea, this way there can possibly be less fraud when looking into accidents, and it can shut the car off if the driver is not sober, possible even saving hundreds or thousands of lives a year. Again it is controversial but a black box that records the activity of the car would not stop me from buying it, a black box that has a camera pointed inside the car, might."

Extremely annoyed with this concepts and frankly very happy that my boss finds facebook completely distracting and doesn't care much about who is on it. Our work policy is that if your facebook has inappropriate content then don't link yourself as an employee at the company, otherwise it doesn't really matter. I cant imagine a company other than one with social media that would care about Klout.
In other words, lets keep out fingers crossed that Klout does not survive for very long -_-"
posted on Mar 5, 2013, on the post You are not hired because your Klout score is not high enough."this post was probably one that caught my attention the quickest, There have been countless news sites as well as entertainment sites on which i saw comments that people leave and next to their name you see their facebook picture, on the other hand if you look at Yahoo! Answers people link their email accounts which could easily be faked with fake names and identities. I'm not entirely sure if that would be referred to as fraud or not because though some of the comments left are truly despicable it is also a way to speak your mind and ask questions without giving away who you are, that kind of privacy and ability to protect yourself is something we really value. Generally its a confusing topic with both pros and cons."

The solution i used as well as many of my friends is that we use a fake name or make my account completely invisible to people who are not my friends, and when my name is searched i had set up that my Facebook does not come up, at least until i have secured my job position. Another alternative i had found was using http://www.linkedin.com/ its a place where you can create a professional profile, upload and design your resume as well as network with people in your said field."
