Left Over Feelings (20 min)
Yoon writes the following:
The part I was the most engaged in was towards the middle/end of the episode where despite the PTA or just the people in general who held a certain part of power in the school, which was mainly white parents as they had the free time to do so compared to the Black/Latino parents where both parents had to work and had no time for things like PTA. In the new SIS, BHS, it was comforting to hear that the people who had the most influence, white parents were more willing to commit to a truly integrated school. The part where the rumors of the PTA stealing money for the downstairs middle school started spreading amongst the students. A part of me thought “disappointing but not surprising” because throughout the episodes, the problems just felt like a loop that the white parents kept creating, ultimately affecting families of color. One of the students, Jeremiah said “it’s always been that”, it was understandable for Jeremiah and the other students of color to have believed and be enraged by such rumors because that was what they have come to expect from the white parents/families. Disappointment with a false sense of hope.

What was your reaction to Jeremiah and his “left over feelings”? How important are “feelings” in education and how do you react to Jermiah’s history of schooling, Success Academy’s approach, and BHS’s approach?
Write privately for about 5 minutes and then we will do some group or whole-class discussion.
Also: what else stood out to you about this episode? What was surprising or interesting?
Rhetorical Choices, Claims, Evidence, Linking Evidence to Claim (30-45 min)
Read the paper I am passing out to you now.
To find the paper after today, go to Brightspace>our class>Student Writing (see left part of page under “Visual Table of Contents Widget”)>Rhetorical Analysis Draft 1 Feb 24
As you read, do the following:
- Circle each time a specific, rhetorical choice is mentioned (e.g., how a segment is organized, background sounds, tone of voice, effects of a specific quote, music)
- Read the paper again. While reading, underline which rhetorical choice you were most interested in based on the way the writer wrote about it. Be prepared to share why.
With a partner, discuss the rhetorical choice you mentioned as most interesting and be prepared to explain your reasons to the class.
So, what came up?
- The use of sounds and music to contrast different but parallel things (e.g., the Freedom Day protestors and the White parent protestors)
- The ordering of segments to set up a contrast (e.g., NYC BOE film and Mae Mallory interview)
- Recordings to get us to feel what it was like to be there and emotionally connect to protestors
- General pattern: describe in details what happened in episode and then get readers to remember what that was like to comment on how that rhetorical choice happened (and why)
Finding a Main Argument in a First Draft (30-45 min)
Re-read the paper again. Do the following:
- Write down on the back of the paper what you think the main argument is.
- Write a brief note next to each paragraph that explains how the paragraph contributes to the main argument.
So, what is the main argument right now?
How can we make the argument stand out more and how can we thread it through the whole paper? What do you think?
Finally: what is the purpose of this assignment would you say? What does doing this writing help you do?
Next Time (5 min)
-I’ll have comments on your drafts by today. Please read my comments!
-Read “Navigating Genres” by Kerry Dirk
-Write your Reaction post
-Do you weekly private writing. Weekly private writing of at least 10 minutes: The semester is likely starting to get difficult for you. The first few weeks are usually about getting used to a new class and professors tend to want you to get comfortable first before they start challenging you more. Do you feel that is true in your classes right now? How are you adjusting? And how can you apply what you learned in previous semesters to be successful this semester? Would you focus on time management? Study strategies? Setting a good habit for writing (e.g., finding a good place to write, sticking with a routine)? Something else? Write about how you are handling the semester’s work starting to pick up in difficulty and amount of work.
-Start to think about potential podcast topics for our class related to something we are hearing about in Nice White Parents. Something about NYC schools? About college? About race and class? About distribution of resources? About school funding? On Wednesday, I am going to introduce the research project you will do and this project will start building toward our podcast assignment.
