Ash Ketchum
Radical Media
435 Hudson Street/6th FL
New York, New York, 10014

Dear Ash Ketchum,

I am writing to apply for a position in the summer job for assisting in the production in the new science series for Discovery Networks. I learned about this offering from the STARR research website that is linked with Baruch College. I am currently attending my second semester at Baruch College. I plan to major in science and is also interested in cinematography which may be a potential minor later in my college career.

I am suitable for this job because I know a little about film production. I have made short films before of games and school project related videos using Sony Vegas and Windows Movie Maker. If I am unfamiliar to a certain program to edit the video; I can learn fast when it comes to these types of programs. I am also interested in science. I took many required and elective classes in high school and is currently taking science courses in Baruch College.

I can contribute to Radical Media by assisting in the making of the film. I can learn from and offer my prior knowledge to Radical Media in the sciences. I can also assist in editing videos since I have prior knowledge and enjoy to work with movie editing programs. I would like to thank you for your time and consideration. If it is possible, may I get an interview for Radical Media. For further information, please contact me at 123-456-790 or email at [email protected]. Again, thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

Dear Eileen,

You are a great friend. I understand that you want what is best for me when you say I should pursue in the career if a foot doctor. You believe that I have a foot fetish, thus I would enjoy this career path. You also told me that foor doctors make big money and I would be proud of my skills because I am helping others that are in need of curing foot problems. I understand that you care for my future and want me to become successful but this is not my career path.

I would like you to understand that first of all, I do not have a foot fetish nor have I ever had a foot fetish. I also want to tell you that I am more interested in being a scientist of some sort. I enjoy science and would prefer to work with biology related work. For example, a forensic scientist, a zoologist, or some kind of lab work. Perhaps, I’ll grow up to find a cure for some disease or cancer

Although what you want me to do is not something I want to do, I want to thank you for your concern and want to let you know that I appreciate everything you told me.

Sincerely,

Lily Poon

Personal Statement

by Lily Poon | 2 Comments

I have always lived a happy life with fun and loving friends and family even through hard times and good times. One of the most important figures in my life are my parents. My parents are in their 50s and work hard to put food on the table. I believed that if I help them when I have time, they will be happy. I would help do house chores without being asked and is proud to make my parents proud. I also gain their trust by proving that I am not a bad girl. I do not drink, smoke, or party. I always let my parents know where I am and when I will be home. I always believed that I was a good daughter, especially compared to many teenagers in society.

Not only do I try to be a good daughter, I try to be a good friend. Recently, I have two friends that experienced death in the family, a mother and a grandmother. Although I am not related to any of them, I feel the sadness that my friends feel about the death. It makes me sad because I knew the both the mother and the grandmother and they were very both sweet women. I told my friends that if they ever needed to talk, I was all ears, and they did. They told me how they felt and felt more relieved after letting out their stress. I would also try to cheer them up by letting them know funny moments or embarrassing moments that happened to me. For example, not only once, but twice, I walked into the boys bathroom in school. Luckily, there was no one in the bathroom when I walked in. I realized that I was in the wrong bathroom when I saw urinals. I know I am not perfect and make mistakes, so I believe that it is okay to let someone know my embarrassing moments. What happened, happened and I would careless what someone else thinks as long as everyone have a good laugh about it.

I also think that I am a good friend because one of my best friends have been hospitalized for a month due to a car accident. Every other day I would try my best to visit him. I believe that if friends visits, it encourages the person to heal faster and get better. Doctors have said that he was very lucky to live from the accident and woke up amazingly fast. I believe that it may be because of all his friends constantly visiting. Now he is doing well but sometimes forgets what happened in the past. He often tells me to remind him of things and tell him things that happened. I am patient and explain things slowly to him so he can try to remember. Sometimes he gets frustrated that he can’t remember but I continue to stay calm and give him time to absorb the information.

Other than being a good family member or good friend, I try to be good to myself too. I am happy for who I am and do not let others put me down. I stay confident in myself when I am determined to do something. For example, I am currently in Baruch College and I like it here, it has a very lively community, but I do not want to stay here. I want to transfer to a SUNY university because I have always wanted to dorm and I believe it has a greater variety of interests for me compared to Baruch. For days and days, I told myself that I was determined to get into a SUNY by working hard my first year in college. Right now, I am currently accepted into University at Buffalo and is currently waiting on three more schools. Sometimes, I make myself proud.

Forensic/Biology Career

When someone says “forensics” first thing that usually comes to one’s mind is the TV show, CSI; one of the popular TV shows featuring forensics. I think forensics is very interesting and would like to enjoy my future career in that field. I have never watched a single CSI episode though, it was actually because of my high school forensic class that interested me. A professor also explained to me that being a forensic scientist allows an individual to work specific times unlike a doctor that may have to sacrifice time for an emergency. Not only having reasonable hours, being a forensic scientist also gives benefits such as “Pensions, health insurance, paid vacations (usual benefits). These benefits are normally offered for many positions.” (Professor Espana)

I think I want to work as a forensic scientist or a biologist for the forensic field because I believe that it is a job I would be good at and have fun at the same time. By working as a forensic scientist I can value my strengths as well. One of my strengths is concentrating on something I enjoy. As a child, I loved reading murder mysteries. Forensic in a way, reminds me of those murder mysteries which I grew to love as a child and growing up to want to be part of the murder mystery by solving the mystery. I believe that if I have always had interest in the topic, I can do well and concentrate as a forensic scientist as my career.

One other strength that would be a great factor for this career is that I learn very well especially if it is hands-on. Forensic Biologists may work in labs and identify the material (as blood, semen, etc.), species determination and genetic marker profiling using DNA analysis. (Police department) This type of work is a hands-on kind of work that I can learn new things and learn about the crime.

An alternative career that I can choose is a Biologist that works in a lab or some kind of animal scientist (zoologist). I believe that these can value the same kind of strengths that I have listed above. I can concentrate on what I am working on because I am always curious about animals and I like to interact with them, as long as they do not bite. I also do not like a closed office environment and prefer working in a large open space or outdoors which would fit into the zoologist career. Research zoologists work mainly in laboratories while conducting experiments on a particular animal. Those experiments are observed, depending on the experiment to help determine the health and well-being of the animal. Other zoologists are more commonly associated with zoos where they maintain and direct the activities that an animal must properly go through. They spend most of their time out in the field, enduring the same conditions as the life forms they’re studying. Some work very closely with animals to observe their daily habits and to insure proper habitat.” ( Education Portal) I am also very social so I may like working as a Biology teacher since I always liked Biology class in both junior high school and high school

. Since forensic scientist is my main career goal, I can prepare for it in many ways. “First step: receive a bachelor’s degree in forensic science or a traditional science. Second step: Pursue internships and get to know people in the field. You learn much more once in the field.” (Professor Espana) I learned from Professor Espana from John Jay College that any degree in traditional sciences can lead me into the forensics career. In this case, I plan to major in Biology. This major can help me approach my career in forensics or in any of my alternative careers except being a teacher would require getting a teaching degree. She also explained that the best way to find career in Forensics is Networking. “Networking in groups such as Northeastern association of forensic scientist (NEAFS) , governmental job postings, and private lab postings.” And an advice that she gave was “I would talk to other scientists and of other disciplines so you get more of feeling of what discipline you would like to join. You can get most information from practicing scientists. An advice would be to network. Network and internships after you do your general sciences Biology, Chemistry and Physics.” (Professor Espana) I think by following her advice, it can lead me to my career that I am interested in.

Starting salaries for forensic scientists ranged from $20,000 to $40,000 in 1998. Experienced crime lab professionals earned about $40,000 to $85,000, and some lab directors earned as much as $100,000. (Dillon, Hall) Over the years, they also believe that forensic jobs were going to increase but have a lot of competition with jobs with the Department of Justice. Today, salaries for forensic scientist still varies depending on what field you are in but the starting salary is $70,000. (Salary Wizard) I think that the salary is a decent pay or quite good to begin with especially if an individual will enjoy the work and have fun while he/she is at it.

Strong Interest Inventory Interpretation

by Lily Poon | 2 Comments

After taking the strong interest inventory interpretation, I got interesting results. My top ten were: Medical Technician, Radiologic Technologist, Respiratory Therapist, Production Worker, Medical Technologist, Pharmacaist, Biologist, Artist, and Speech Pathologist.

I was quite surprised I got these “strong occupations” because truthfully, I have not heard of some of these occupations. I am quite interested in science so I think the strong interest inventory interpretation hit the spot on the science fields but I don’t know if I would be that into the medical fields that were shown. I believe that these can be alternative careers in the future if I decide to change my mind about a certain career.

I have always wanted to be some kind of Biologist whether it is in the forensic field, research field, or working and interacting with animals. I think working and interacting with animals would be fun because there are always news about some researcher or scientist who discovers a new species and I think that when they find this new species it’s a great accomplishment. I would feel proud of my self if I found a new species! Other than animals, I always loved mystery books, so relating it to forensics, it is like solving a murder mystery! I think I would be very interested in being a forensic scientist or a forensic biologist who works in the lab. I believe I can learn from what the information I find and would enjoy doing it (after all I still think it’s like solving a murder mystery, Sherlock Holmes? =D ).

I admit the strong interest inventory interpretation was very close to the careers I THINK I might want to do.

Strengths&Weaknesses?

by Lily Poon | 3 Comments

My name is Lily Poon but my friends call me Poon. I was born in New York and was raised in Brooklyn. Like many people no matter where I am from, I have my strengths and weaknesses.

One of my strengths that I am very proud of is liking who I am. Many people criticize, tease, or bully others with hurtful words. When these bullies says hurtful words to me, I simply ignore them. I believe that I do not need someone else telling me who I am. I don’t believe in someone trying to put me down or telling me that I am unable to do something. Liking who I am creates a sense of confidence for my self. I believe that I can do things, get things done, or accomplish things that would make me proud of my self. I am not impressing others, I am impressing my self.

Another strength that I have is being athletic (even though I think I am currently out of shape). I tend to play sports, especially handball. I play at least twice a week when it is nice and warm out. It is my source of exercise and I can have fun while I’m at it. I also used to play volleyball in high school but since there is not many places with volleyball courts, I some-what stopped playing. Another activity I like to do is biking. I used to bike all the time as a child but after a while, I stopped due to school and laziness. Starting from two years ago, I began biking again. I like biking because it feels relaxing; I can get my mind off things for a while. I also enjoy the speed, especially going downhill and it is another great source of exercise. Lastly, I like to swim in the summer. When it is very hot out, going to the nice cool pool is perfect. Same as biking, it is relaxing and it is a great source of exercise.

Weaknesses- I think I have plenty. One of the famous ones is procrastination. Even though I keep track of time and I get my work done on time, I do procrastinate a lot. My laziness tends to kick in and I don’t finish my work and leave the unfinished work until last minute. I still get it done before it is due but I sacrifice sleep to finish it. Due to this, I lack sleep and I show up to school very tired.

Another major weakness I have is that I get distracted easily. My friends like to joke that I have “ADD” because my mind often wonders and find random things around me very interesting. This is the major reason that leads to procrastination. I often find an interesting video on YouTube which leads to another video on the related videos which leads to even more videos. This can be quite time consuming. Next thing I know, it’s already 12AM!

I probably have more strengths and weaknesses but I think these are the major ones.
