The ISKCON Movement in America:

ISKCON was started by a man named A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. He arrived in New York City in 1966 with the intention of spreading Vaishnavism to America. This is one of the many Hindu traditions, which focuses on the worship of Krishna. He arrived with nothing, and had no followers waiting for him, but within a year he had already rented out the storefront at 26 Second Avenue. This became the birthplace of the ISKCON movement.

In the temple at Schermerhorn, there is a section specifically dedicated to him. His importance as the founder of the ISKCON organization is not forgotten. This particular temple has been in place since the 1980’s and is most likely one of the larger spaces that was acquired when the small storefront at 26 Second Avenue became too small.

My intent was to attend services at the ISKCON temple on Second Avenue on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, but after many failed phone calls I had to change this. So instead, I attended the ISKCON temple on Schermerhorn St. in Brooklyn.
