Working at home- The future of all jobs
March 21, 2012
Who needs to be a professional writer? Who needs formal training to edit a video? Who needs 10 years of experience to be the star of a radio show? We can do any of the three in the comfort of our own home. In this time of age, we are the creators of our own media… at least if we choose to be. Rosen pointed out that anyone can be a writer, video producer or even radio broadcaster. I bet in 20 years, more people will be working at home.
As you may know, I am a long time YouTube watcher. I like to watch video to learn new things or just to watch random videos to pass time. Many people that I’m subscribed to have already quit their day jobs to pursue a full time career on YouTube. At first, it was bizarre to me. I mean, who quits their job to make videos? However, if you look at it in different angle, making videos is actually their home business. I love the fact that none of these people received formal training and have no real experience, but yet they can somehow pursue a career in it!
This all ties back to what Rosen says in his article. We are now “formerly known as the audience.” We control what we want to see and we control what we want to put out there. We are now in equal power with those big bad companies.

Clay Shirky raised the question of why the creators of the contents for sites like facebook, and youtube are working for free, while the owners are making lots of money. Somehow I disagree with this idea for two reasons, one, the creators are working voluntarily, and two, they have free access to large amounts of contents they did not create, contents that would otherwise cost alot.
Anyway my point is, if these creators do not receive any direct financial compensation, why are they leaving their jobs to create videos for Youtube? I am really curious as to how they are getting paid.

I think that the opportunity social media allows us to create videos and share content is fantastic, but I don’t think is the future of all jobs. I specially like the quality of information made from a professional writer, an experienced video producer or radio broadcaster. People can quit their jobs and be an entrepeneur, that is an option but there is a risk with that kind of desicion. Sometimes it is not the best choice.

I have the same question that Eddy has. How are these people getting paid? I have come accross many users on youtube who claim to have quit jobs to create these videos. I agree they are good video, but come on we need to get real. No one really works full time for free!?

Hi everyone! From my research, most of them get money from ads that get generated on their videos. Aside from that income, many are also invited to events and receive sponsors from companies. Like how celebrities get paid for showing up to an event and wearing a particular brand, youtube stars do too! Many also start their own online business to sell branded tshirts, etc.
Here are two articles that talks about how Youtube users get paid.
