Reading: Russolo, The Art of Noises

Summary

Luigi Russolo was an Italian artist and he is most known for his involvement in the futurist movement. He studied painting but later became interested in noise and music. Hence, he invented a noise-emitting machine called intonarumori. His, “The Art of Noises” proposed to include incidental noise in musical composition. His concerts with intonarumori gained attention and received recognition from Stravinsky and Diaghilev. His career shifted because of the opposition to Fascism, which led him to study philosophy in Paris and Spain. During the end of his time, he returned back to painting with a realistic style.

For the second part of the assignment. I chose “The Dial-A-Poem Poets - A Diamond Hidden In The Mouth Of A Corpse”. First, I chose this noise because I liked the name “A Diamond Hidden”. However, after listening to it I realized it is very chaotic and it’s hard to understand the words of the song. I think it is the electric guitar that is playing very loud in the background and making me shift all my attention to it instead of the lyrics. Unfortunately, I never thought about sound as art until I started studying it in our last NMA class. I think it's beautiful how everything is a form of art and we can create so many different forms from just one piece. I picked this music because I assumed it would be calm but it was the opposite of it. I think this is perfect for making someone feel energetic and motivated to get up.
