response to Kayla Williams discussion questions

2: Williams didn’t join the army for any one specific reason. Instead it was a result of all the events that had happened to her up until this point. She hated how she was constantly being controlled, whether it be by Rick or by society. She suffered through her life from many negative influences and tough life experiences. Joining the military was a way to get away from some of the struggles of her every day life in the states. She hated the way that some people would view her as “just some girl” or how her boyfriend would try and control her. When he even said that if she would serve the military he would break up with her that didn’t stop Kayla. She wanted change. She had suffered from drug-use and emotional trauma from her family system and was trying to be able to support herself, this can lead to being extremely stressful and the military is a way to get away from all these things weighing on her conscience.

1: The myth about writing that I feel applies to me is “The 5 paragraph essay”. Throughout my whole life its just been the way to write an essay was with the 5 paragraphs. that’s how i’ve always been taught and i’ve never explored different approaches to essays

2: High School research is normally just going to google and finding the first basic information that you find. In college we need to learn how to use the library and online databases to find specific detailed information.

3: An “argument” in a college essay is a claim or thesis that you’re making in your essay. generally the purpose of your essay is to defend this claim or argument. You must support that claim with good reasons

4: The Closed Writing Assignment, the Semi Open writing assignment and the Open Writing Assignment are the 3 types of writing assignments. The closed writing assignment is basically asking you to defend a side of a yes or no question. the semi open paper offers you subject matter to write about but doesn’t give you any specific info to put into your writing. And Open writing assignments allow you to make your own topic and find out the information you need

5: effective writing has to be supported thoroughly. For writing to be effective you have to be clear In getting your points across.

6: the author feels it is more important to use first person when trying to describe your own personal opinion on an issue. You wouldn’t use first person in a piece where you are using information from others or from supporting material.

7: One situation where it is clearly a bad time to use I is in a lab report.  A lab report is a type of writing where there is no place to use your personal opinion as a lab report should be based on all fact and not opinion.
