New Media

Power of the Web

Clay Shirky in this book gives real concrete examples of the power of the web and how its changing things. At first i thought this book was going to be boring but i actually found it very interesting. Shirky goes on to explain  how he posted a website page and attracted so many followers.

The internet is so vast and attracts so many users  together and pretty much form one big community. The book goes on to explain how individuals are being “media outlets”, that each one of us can post content and ideas.

Given these opportunities by the internet enables us to to change the world today. For example the revolutions that are happening throughout the world starting in Tunisia and moving on into Egypt. The connection that the internet brings, Facebook for example, enables people to communicate fast and  efficiently. The internet definitely has its pros and cons but i believe the pros outweigh the cons. If you just look at how the world is changingin a  positive way , you would most probably think the same.

  1. It’s a just matter of balancing and regulating the rules of the internet. Privacy will be the biggest issue. But I agree that almost everyone of us is a media outlet and bringing us closer together.

  2. Miro, I feel the same way you feel. I am so intrigued by the affects of new media and its various platforms throughout the Internet. I know its going to really change the way we operate as a society. I’m slightly ambivalent about the change, but nonetheless I am bracing myself to reap all of its benefits from an entrepreneurial standpoint. I am also excited to see its affects in the political sphere.

    Thanks for your post!!

  3. I agree with you that the pros of the Internet outweigh the cons. Almost everyone today is using the Internet as a source of information and commmunication, and for many other uses. Even though people are aware of the issues of the Internet like privacy, people still continue to use the Internet.

  4. I completely agree with you on that. It was an easy read for because I just find it so interesting. It’s amazing what you can do with the internet nowadays. Also, like you said about there are more positive effects than negative effects [of the internet], I absolutely agree with you on that as well. People always complain that people are using their information without their consent, their privacy being invaded, plus, they can be a victim of identity theft, but that should be basically it. I mean for common people like us, those should be the only consequences for us. That’s nothing compared to what it has been giving us back.
