I am also very surprised about how this story ended, but I really don’t understand the girls behavior In the begining when they first met and then the sudden change in feelings. Why did she act like that and co pletly turn around.

I had that same reaction when I read the story. I asked myself why all of a sudden did she come with her maid to go see him after being angry with him for trying to come and see her?

I had that kind of feeling as well at the first time reading. When I read the story again after knowing s0me background of the story, I understood that how conflicting would Ying Ying feel that she met Chang behind her mother. She was a well educated girl and she really cared about how other people would think about her if they notice the relationship between her and Chang. The reason why she changed her emotion very soon, I think would be that she felt hesitating, and was fighting herself against the forbidden culture in her mind at the time when she met Chang.
