In his book, the author deals about the differences in education since the development of new technologies and what he calls “the modern home environment of integrated electric information”. Today, children may face to the “adult world” with the news their parents are watching on T.V. The today’s issues such as inflation, war or how the market price is evolving are not supposed to be exposed to children and it may have a bewilered effect on them. Indeed, they can feel confuse because they are exposed prematurely to some issues they are not able to understand. Usually, when information is misunderstood, child can develop an alterated vision of what he or she has absorbed in the news.
This statement contrasts with the traditional and established educational methods existing before, where parents used to give to their children a structuring framework and limits. The author compares these kind of methods with a factory and the assembly line production.
The author goes further in his statement. He says that the notion of childhood is no longer existing and furthermore, the notion of “child” has never existed. It is quite confusing because people generally view the “childhood” as a stage of life. Life is a cycle. We are first a child, then a teenager and then we become an adult. Childhood is significant and essential in the life of each individuals because it is a way to discover the world, to learn how to a feel it. It is the time for making mistakes and for building up a self-esteem.
According to the author, “mere instruction” is no longer enough. Children are growing too fast. Media, new technologies and interactive toys which soaring on the market are partly responsible for this change. Although mass media and technology does provide many positive benefits for learning, it also can have several negative effects on child development and quality of life like sedentariness or an sleep cycle negativly affected.
