Work of Art Reading Response

After reading The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction by Walter Benjamin, I feel like one of the things that caught my attention was when he discussed how replications of art miss the aspect of time and space, I was originally expecting him to say that it would be missing its authenticity as in it may not have a strong of a meaning or may differ physically compared to the original piece. I do agree with him that the aspect of history does play an important role in art since it puts a lot of meaning as the author phrased the way the piece “suffered in physical condition over the years” or the “changes of ownership.” Another thing that stuck out to me was when the author wrote how mechanical reproduction not only changed tradition but also helped to move things forward in terms of art. It connects to how art and the concept of time and space are connected. Even though it may not be the same as the traditional sense of art, it becomes a new evolution of art in its own way. It’s really shown when he writes about theater and film. Theater is the traditional format, while film is the evolution. This example really stuck out to me because I took a theater class where we talked about the importance of theater and how it differs from film. They have similar roots, but they also have their own set of benefits from each other. In the theater, you get to experience the art in the present moment with its atmosphere. In film, the actors are allowed to perform certain things at different moments. For example, he wrote about the actor’s reaction to a door opening and how it can be reshot multiple times. With film, the team can perfect it to match their vision, compared to its traditional roots that may present its authentic flaws. It really shows how traditional art and mechanical evolution of art are both valuable in different ways. It allows one to experience the same piece and have different experiences and interpretations.
