Dear Mother,
I know you love me so much, and wish me a good future, that is why you strongly suggest me to go to the Medical school instead of Baruch College. You see the doctor is successful and good reputation. However, ma, your glass is not fit on me, because you understands me so much or even better than myself, you know that I am scare of blood, and careless. I hate everything relates to Science especially the Physics. And I really enjoyed and good in Business area, as I told you before, I want to study for Business then start my own business, and I want to give you something that my father did not gave to you, such as wealthier life.
So, my lovely ma, if you really love me and cares about my own feeling, please support me to major in Business but not force me to go to Medical school, because I do not want to kill people by mistake, and I do not want this disagreement hurt our uniquely relationship. I love you. 妈妈!
Yours,
Mei Ling Chen

I am a Chinese, and I have a common name called “mei ling” in Chinese. My name is means beautiful and successful. This is my parent’s goal for me, and I try to make the significant meaning of my name come true by achieve more about my future.
When I was 2 years old, my father moved to America for a better life, unfortunately, he had car accident when I was 5 years old (1997), he had physical illness since that car accident and he have to stay at hospital, this means my father could no longer make money. So to take care of me and my brother becomes my mother’s responsibilities.
My mother was a hard worker, she usually works at the mosquito net factory, and her job is to sew the mosquito net with long, overlying stitches. I usually helped her to put on the plastic flower at the top of the mosquito net, and I never complain about it because I like to relief my mother’s tension from working. But soon my mother had the disease so she could no longer working, our life is getting worst than before. Even our life is poor, my mother never try to cut off my education, because to her, knowledge would change everything, she told me that it does not matter if we eat and dress well or not, I have to get the education. I learned it from my mother that the only turning point for my future is to getting the education. If I have knowledge more and I can protect my mother more. And I did well at my elementary school, junior high. I joined a lot of school activities, most of them are to help classmates to understand more about art, and I was also a Chinese tutor when I was at junior high. Most of my teacher suggests me to be a teacher since I like to talk to people and to help people.
When I was 15 years old, my mother, my brother, and I moved to America. For me and my brother, our goals is to get a better education, for my mother, the goal is to take care of my father and let us understand more about the “family happiness”.
During the first semester of Lafayette High School I felt I was useless because I did not speak English at all, so I have to learn it from the beginning. To learn the second language is full of obstacles, I get average of 55% for my first semester; I felt the end of the earth was coming. So I struggled from learning the English and I finally find the right way of to study the English, that is, reading more English literature, speaking more in English, and to practice writing in English. Then I achieved my part of goal that I graduated from Lafayette High School in 3 years. I automatically applied to Baruch College because I want to learn more about business then have my own business and to make a better life for my family members.
Most of people around me know that I am a very hardworking and like challenges. I believe that challenge would make me grow more. I learned from my mother that as you do more, you’re achieved more, so I work part-time while attending school full-time as well. I appreciate the valuable experience I get working and I benefit from it as much as I benefit from school. While attending school full-time, I have to work 35 hours a week at nails salon and at the SEEK office of Baruch College. I have to work because my mother has business at China and she usually go back to China about 6 months then she will come back to America to see if I am doing well or not. There has not enough time for me to study. When I look around at the other students studying and I feel envious and even angry, but I know that the work experiences teaches me things that these other students will be unlikely to learn.

My future career
meiling1 on Mar 30th 2010
My dream is to become a Management Accountants, according to the websites of United States Department of Labor, the standard of to be a Management Accountants includes: record and analyze the financial information of the companies for which they work. This means to be a Management Accountants I have to be patient and careful, I think I can deal with it because I am very patient and careful to read the information. Second, Among Management Accountant’s other responsibilities are budgeting, performance evaluation, cost management, and asset management. Usually, management accountants are part of executive teams involved in strategic planning or the development of new products, which means Management Accountants, is a brain job and I think my brain’s structure is okay because I always bring the new idea whether at school or at home. Third, they analyze and interpret the financial information that corporate executives need to make sound business decisions, they also prepare financial reports for other groups, including stockholders, creditors, regulatory agencies, and tax authorities, this means if I want to have this job I have to express the information clearly, and I like to express and explain the thing that I see or hear, so I think I will make it.
Most of the people who know about me say that I am smart and a former of ideas, and I took the Strong Interest Inventory, my top five interest areas are: sales, Taxes and Accounting, Teaching and Education, Office Management, Protective Services, and if I want to be a member of these careers, I have to do more activities for example as Career- related employment, internship, co-operative education according to Career Discovery by Baruch College. According to Strong Interest Inventory, my career area is Conventional, Enterprising, and Social, and these not a big different from my alternative careers.

I was born in China and I moved to America when I was 15, it is hard for me thinking about my strengths but weaknesses is very easy for me to identify.
First of all, I have a lot of weaknesses. For example, I felt that I always talk too much, whenever I am in the class or at home, my classmates Jian Yun and my parents comments on the face that I am too annoying. and sometimes makes them headache. I always care too much, because I like to help people. Unfortunately, sometimes it will be better without my help, and many of my friends tell me that I am a “women”, because women always cares too much. And I was too childish, because I trust people easily, that is why I always taseted betray, my relatives and my friends always worries about my future because I am a easygoing person that never think about the past events. My friend Jian Yun also noticed that I was too lazy and I am bed in time management because I will do my homework assignment untill the deadline. And other my friend Lin Li noticed that I am easy to give up, because I was absented when we are agreed to go to gym to start our “diet plan”. And I admited it all. Fortunately, I am changing my bad habit and I almost goes to gym everyday with Lin Li and Jian Yun to real my agreement.
In addition, I think my strengths will be singing , the evidence is when I was in China, I was the winner of local singing tournament about three times. When I hang out with my friends, most of them said that I am a professionakl singer, Lin li and Jian Yun also agrees that. Lin Li said that I am friendly that always be nice to the people, she also said that I am willing t o help people, and I will try my best to help them. Jian Yun said that I am a outgoing girl, because I always smilew in front of the people, she also said that I am strong that always take care of myself and like challenge, and never let obstacles get in my way.
