We are all aware how challenging it is to attend a big college or university. Especially for the new incoming students that have never had the college experience, that come straight from high school and become lost in this new place that will be their second home for the next four years of their lives, if not more. We can all agree that we’ve been here at some point. That we’ve felt so intimidated by these immense walls and the thousands of people surrounding us. We’ve felt so out of place, without any friends or a familiar face, with brand new teachers, that are now called professors, that will be teaching us many different subjects, some extremely hard and challenging. I know we’ve all felt this sudden panic and anxiousness when starting a new chapter in our lives which is why I believe interacting with other students that are going through the same pain as you is so important. It’s important because when we know that others are going through the same pain as us we feel less alone and more relieved that we are not the only ones struggling through that situation. It also lessens our fear of not fitting in or not having someone you can turn to for help.
Because I have felt this way in the past and I’m sure many of us have at some point of our lives, I created an app that will connect students in a college setting. This will allow new incoming students (and undergrad in general) to have a platform where they can meet other students that have similar interests without having to be intimidated walking through the hallways watching others have conversations with friends or classmates wishing that was them. without being scared of asking someone for help finding a classroom or an office. This app will give them the opportunity to join a pod (a group of individuals who share similar interests, similar careers, etc…). There they will meet other students with their same major and classes. It will also offer them the chance to partake in an extracurricular workshop designed for all the different majors at that particular school. This app will also have many features like, alerting the students when someone from their pod is near them or in the same class as them, which will make it easier to walk up to rather than to someone you don’t know anything about.
Rarely we see anything like this done at any schools which is why I have felt this pain in the past. I was that student who was intimidated by this new world. the student who felt frustrated and lonely at times because I didn’t have any friends. The student who wished had the opportunity to have access to a platform like this, that helped me find at least one person that I could count on during those four challenging years. It was extremely hard, especially for those students that leave their hometowns to attend city universities. That move to a new place by themselves and have to adapt. sadly, it happens way too often but I believe that with an app like this, many students will take advantage of this opportunity while they can and relieve themselves of this pain.
Hi Melissa, this is not a bad idea, it just makes me wonder how many people will use it. Maybe it’s just because I am an introvert and socializing with strangers sounds overwhelming to me. I think there is something here, but perhaps only for a specific kind of person. Granted, I don’t use current socializing apps. Good luck!
