Opening statement:

Communication is used on an everyday basis and plays an important role in the work place. It is defined as the interchange of thoughts, opinions or information by speech, writing or signs. It is through communication that ideas get expressed, shared, heard, and put into action throughout the world. It is what makes our businesses better and our networks stronger. We have seen how important it is to identify the most compatible individual communication method in our DISC exercise. We are all observers of the many problems that arise for the sole reason of miscommunication. For this reason, today, we have brought in professionals who will help us to gain that necessary edge by acquiring more knowledge about communication.  It is through them that we learn the importance of communication, as well as insure a better future in tomorrow’s business world.

Closing statement with key points:

We would like to thank all the speakers for coming today. Your comments were really helpful to all of us. There were many great comments. Here are a few key points our class should take away from this panel:

– The means of communication are changing; we no longer always need a face to face conversation since we can call, e-mail etc.

– Both verbal and written communications are important; you need to find the balance between the two

– Follow up with an e-mail after a face to face conversation

– Decide on visual vs. auditory communication depending on who you are talking to

– Details matter!!!

– Make sure your information is not just clear, but also timely

– Don’t just hear, LISTEN!

– Be interested in what you’re doing

– Everyone has a “predicting machine” that we use to make judgments about people before we even begin interacting with them; we should turn this “machine” off

Some interesting acronyms that were mentioned:

KFC

K- know what you want

F- find what you’re getting

C- change strategy to get it

The INFINITE C’s

Confidence

Competence

Clarity

Communication

Connection

Courage

If you’re not great at communicating, it’s okay. Practice makes perfect. As Sue mentioned, there are classes available for those who want to improve their skills. Communication is probably the most important factor in job performance, regardless of which field you are in; its significance is immeasurable.

I thought this was a pretty good panel. The group was well organized and i could tell they really put their effort into it. However, I felt like it was more entertaining the informative. I’m not sure if that’s a good thing or a bad thing. It sucked that the video didn’t work because i thought it might have been essential to the panel. Overall, I thought it was one of the better panels.

Communication is such an important and crucial skill that everyone needs to have. I’m really glad your group chose this topic. Communication is not always the easiest and it was really good to get some tips and advice from professionals. Your panelists interacted with each other and the class really well. The video in the beginning was different which I think made your presentation stand out. You guys worked hard and it definitely showed.

    mchai,
    informatively entertaining I hope (smile)

This panel chose a great topic. Everyone has to deal with communication especially in the business world, it becomes a vital tool. I am glad that the panel speakers were able to discuss this matter in depth. It seemed they took extra efforts to engage the audience and entertain them which is good. But it should really be the quality of the panelist since that is the main foundation for the project. Overall, the panel speakers were great, everything was set, and they definitely took it a notch higher.

  5. hkhouryon May 5th 2010 at 10:04 am

It is obvious that this panel communicated with each other well in creating all the extras which they presented (eg. the video), and that made the experience much more interesting. Although there were endless and cheesy acronyms being thrown out there by the panel members, they are all very important and memorable. Great panel.

  6. Sarah Jalilion May 5th 2010 at 8:57 pm

This was one of my favorite panels because the panelists were amazing. They were giving such great advice. Communication is a very important tool, both written and verbal. Written is harder than verbal because when speaking you show emotion and action which is communicated effectively. While writing it, you have to be very careful so the other person doesn’t take it the wrong way.

  7. Teresa Cenon May 8th 2010 at 8:30 pm

I thought this was an unique panel. I like that fact that they included a video and skit of communication gone wrong at the workplace. The downside was the technical problems, like how the video didn’t work and music was too loud. But what’s great about this panel was that I picked up a lot of C’s and the phrase KFC from the panelists. Confidence, Competence, Clarity, Communication, Connection, Courage really stuck to my mind and the panel discussion was unforgettable. Overall great job!

I thought this was a very interesting panel. It is actually one of my favorites. The speakers, messages, and advice were significant. Sometimes we take for granted of how important listening and communicating over all is, the panel made us aware of the importance of it. Also Panel 3 was the first one to use table clothes and nametags for its speakers, great idea, it looked very professional. Also it was noticeable that the team put a lot of effort into this presentation.

  9. vhwang7on May 9th 2010 at 2:42 pm

I found this presentation to be very unique because your topic, communication, has more of a human element to it rather than just organizational. I think all the speakers here demonstrated their personability rather than their knowledge on anything in business, and that is what seperated your group from the others that I’ve seen so far. Great work guys!

  10. yingpinglinon May 9th 2010 at 9:24 pm

I like how this panel is organized. Although the skit doesn’t work at the beginning, the overall flow of this panel communication is really good and interesting. Someone asked whether it is entertaining or informative, I think it is both. The speakers are really good and they gave a lot of examples about how communication works in daily life. I like Professor Gaunt’s story about her conflicts with the other professor in the same department and she sought to solve it by going to a mediator. I think we can use the same method in daily life to overcome with conflicts with other people.ng. Since everyone has different ways of communicating and expressing their ideas, we better not make judgements before we really know this person. Listening is the key in communication. And Sue mentioned if the method does not work, change it. In addition, your panel comes up with a lot of C’s that engages us through out the end.

  11. Catherine Yiuon May 10th 2010 at 12:15 am

I loved the idea of the video, it completely sparked the presentation and got the excitement going. The audience could tell the presentation was well thought out and formulated. Definitely the most prepared team.

I enjoyed this panel because the guest speakers were very lively and entertaining. This group of panel emphasized on communication and communication is very important in everyones life. As one of the guest speaker mentioned that KFC is very important because it helps you analyze and get what you want. There was also many C’s that we can use to apply to our life and career. This group is well prepared.

  13. garvinchenon May 10th 2010 at 4:34 pm

We communicate everyday whether it is with our friends, to the professors, to the security guard or anyone in general. And we will always continue to communicate with others. One of things that was repeated many times by the panelist is learning to listen. I thought I was a great listener but now that I think about it, I am not even close. Listening does not mean just listening but also meaning to show an interest and see how they respond. We have to have some compassion and show we care. Communication is only valuable if we listen to others about what matters to us and you. Thanks for picking this topic.

  14. Oliviazhuon May 10th 2010 at 5:05 pm

This is a very interesting and valuable panel, and I enjoyed this panel because the panelists all have given good advises along with real life experience. At the end they have concluded 10 C’s which consolidated all the important concepts in communication which is very helpful and useful. In my opinion, communications is people’s daily life, all kinds of communication such as body language, eye contact, languages, and even in boarder fields like music, arts, pictures, those are all happening everywhere in our lives. Life will be tough in lack of communication. So of course, do know how to communicate is a big lesson everyone’s life.

  15. Eileen Kaplinskyon May 10th 2010 at 7:22 pm

I loved this panel discussion! It was very organized and surprised me in many ways. First of all, communication is so important no matter where you are… at home, school, personal relationships, business relationships, etc. It was awesome how they used a video for the introduction although it didn’t work properly, but Panel 3 took over right away being able to communicate to us what the video was all about (shows how communication is great and important!!!) This panel discussion had amazing speakers and it was very informative and very enjoyable. You guys were well prepared!

  16. emordechaion May 10th 2010 at 7:35 pm

I think that the KFC thing will stick around. It’s an excellent approach to accomplish your goals. Many people simply just follow the herd, not truly knowing how to get what they want, or even what they want. This panel was perfect for learning about the theme of communication. The theme is vital part of business, and should be stressed more, in my opinion

  17. cristinaon May 11th 2010 at 10:48 am

This was a great panel! One of the better panels out of the class. The topic you chose was interesting because communication is in every aspect of our lives. You could tell that group 3 put a lot of time and effort into preparing this panel. Making a video was a great idea, even though it didnt work. Group 3 bounced back from the computer problem, and communicated to us what the video was about and proceeded with their presentation. The panel memebers were exciting and it felt like they wanted to be in class. All of the speakers were knowledgeable and gave good examples from their experiences. If i had to pick one thing to take away from this panel it would be all of the C’s the panel members came up with.

  18. kkrasowskion May 11th 2010 at 9:49 pm

I thought this panel was very different from the others in regards to making a video. It was a shame that it didn’t work, but I thought that was a really great idea and a really great way to present to the class their topic. I thought that their speakers had a lot of great information and gave really great examples how communications is important. Like when Sue Lee said that her assistant doesn’t respond well to e-mails and prefers if this are said to her. She is an auditory learner not visual. Hoon Lee also brought up a great point when he said make sure you repeat something just to clarify both sides are on the same page. Like when he expected his contractor to have the current construction plan but he didn’t get in touch with him to make sure and the contractor had an old copy.

  19. Yasmineon May 11th 2010 at 10:18 pm

I really enjoyed that panel and it was great to have Prof. Gaunt as part of it. One lesson that I took away with from that panel is that we have to stop hearing and start listenning. Prof Gaunt said it. Many times we think we are listenning but in realily what we are doing is hearing. There’s a great difference between the two and the outcome of knowing this can be tremendous.

  20. Ivette-57on May 11th 2010 at 10:31 pm

The panelists put together for this topic were perfect. They all communicated their thoughts clearly to us as well as each other. It was great to start off the morning with such an energetic group, even though there were difficulties with the videos, it did not matter because the flow of discussion ended up erasing that fact. You know, you learned something when you are able to take away a concept like that of the Infinite C’s because since then I find myself adding words to that list.

  21. elion May 12th 2010 at 12:02 am

I really thought this was a great panel. Everything they had to say was so relevant to what we need to learn and their experiences really tied everything together. They’ve been out in the world working for so long that their knowledge really shows when they tell us about their experiences and it was really insightful for me when I heard about how they used communication in their own day to day job.

  22. kishwar ahmedon May 13th 2010 at 1:02 am

I really liked this panel because communication is a very important topic and something to have at strength to succeed in most careers. It is important to get your point across whether its from writing or verbal.I really liked the fact that this group tried to add a video as part of the presentation, and I admired Hoon Lee’s advices and tips because they were very humorous but very helpful to the audience.

  23. Hemanon May 15th 2010 at 9:25 am

Communication is important in every aspect and your panel did a great job with this topic. The panelists were interesting and engaging. It is important to learn the many ways of communication as communication is also changing and evolving. Your panelists discussed this well and the use of KFC and the never ending C’s are easy enough to remember.

  24. gchoeon May 15th 2010 at 11:17 am

I thought this panel was very creative. From videos to skits, it was very refreshing, although there were some technical difficulties. I also thought there was good balance between the panelists. Diversity in their work and their knowledge on the topic was on point. Also, the panelists adding to each others points very smoothly was very nice. I guess that’s why they were speaking for this panel, since they already knew how to communicate with each other in that short amount of time.

  25. ovgaiton May 15th 2010 at 5:52 pm

A very creative panel. The choice of music to go with with the video the audience hoped to work, was good. The effort put into this panel was very noticeable. The idea of opening up the panelists with a personal video of the group having lack of communication was a great idea. Besides the trouble playing the video, the choice of panelists were interesting. They brought a lot of ideas especially the memorable C’s. Communication was introduced in a deeper depth than I personally saw it as before. Overall the idea of having a talk show made in interesting and engaged the audience because it is something we have not seen before or expected. Great job!

  26. lweion May 15th 2010 at 8:53 pm

Communication is a very important topic nowadays and it matters a lot not only in the management field but also in our daily life. Just like one of the panelists, Sue Lee said, the better communication skills you have, the more chance you can succeed and get promoted in your career. A good set of communication skills is not just speaking but also active listening. Active listening can definately help overcome barriers and improve communication. Also I learned the phrase KFC from this panel, which is very concrete in how to achieve goals: know what you want, find what you are doing, and change stratey to get it. This group even made an interesting video about examples of bad communication. They really did a good job on the preparation.

  27. Darlysha Lirianoon May 16th 2010 at 7:39 pm

What i took away the most from this panel is the infinite C’s. Communication is really important is something we use everyday. The group was really creative in creating the video.

  28. Danaysy Rodriguezon May 16th 2010 at 11:40 pm

I really liked what this panel did: how they organized themselves and how they used some creativity to bring a different element into their panel. Although we didn’t get to see much of the video, i know i appreciated that they had made it themselves and put the effort into preparing it and showing it to the class. I also really liked the panelists that they chose. They all did a great job in sticking to the topic and had great things to add. I loved all the acronyms that were used which is something that i will always remember. The 3 C’s (which turned into like 30 C’s by the end of the semester) and KFC. Apart from the teams structure and enthusiasm what i enjoyed the most is that the panels were hysterical. I learned and laughed throughout this whole panel.

  29. bteeluckon May 17th 2010 at 1:53 am

This was a very strong panel because each speaker had very important points to discuss. Specificially, Kyra Gaunt in using her background in cultural anthropology, had very different suggestions in enhancing effective communication in the workplace or in a business or team. She brought up the topic of challenges with diversity and how it is related to communication which I thought was interesting. The group displayed their hard work with the video although a few difficulties were encountered but I think overall this was one of the best panels because the speakers could relate to each a lot and created an easygoing environment for communication.
