Preliminary Questions
1. Is your current job your ideal job back in college? How did you find out what you wanted to do?
2. What were your plans for the future when you were in college? Did they change over time and have they been met yet?
3. It can be a difficult transition from attending classes daily to working a full time job after just graduating from college. Are there any tips you can provide that would make the transition a little smoother or easier for graduating seniors?
4. When working in a group setting in a fast-pace environment, there is bound to be some conflict amongst team members, bosses, or business partners. How do you deal with conflict in the work place? Can you share some tips we can use to settle issues professionally?
5. So far in our management class, we have learned about the power of negotiating and compromising. Do you ever have to negotiate at your workplace? If so, what would you say your tactics are when it comes to negotiating?
6. What are your company’s organizational subcultures? How do these subcultures work in your organization? Do you think they are important for a company?
7. We all know communicating effectively is very important in our everyday lives and especially within organizations. Can you tell us what are some ways we can communicate more effectively in a workplace setting?
8. Do you think you have effective communication skills? How have you developed them overtime?

Keypoints
1. When you are going for an interview, NEVER BE LATE. If it cannot be helped and you are running late, call in advance.
2. Be knowledgeable and prepared for the interview. Study the company and the specific position you are interviewing for.
3. As Lindsay Edelson stated, interact with the interviewers instead of being “robotic” during the whole process. You are suppose to make yourself appeal to the interviewers. Try asking follow up questions after every question they asked you; this will show that you are actually interested in company and the position you are applying for.
4. There are always conflicts in an organization whether it is big or small, but, the conflicts are based on how you approach the problem. Kurt Kraeger stated that you should only have problems after you have worked in a company for 3 years. After that, you can address any of your concerns. When addressing your concerns, ALWAYS address them in a professional matter to leave a good impression on your employer. The business world is so small, that even the slightest mistake or smallest bad impression you leave with the company will be heard by other companies.
5. Joseph Juntereal stated that we should all balance our social and work life. Don’t intervene your work life into your social life, it will only cause more stress!
6. Emanuel Zur suggested to do what you like to do. He quit his job at Ernst & Young because he does not want his children to see the kind of hard working life his father is going through. So, instead he became a professor at Baruch College. Being a professor allowed him to have a flexible schedule and spend more time with his children.

I really enjoyed your topic. We can all relate to this topic considering that we are about to graduate in one more year and the panel speakers, especially Kurt and Lindsay, gave a lot of practical real world career advice. I found the advice of interning and working in any department of an organization even if it is not related to our major to be very valuable. It is true that after interning we may realize our major is not right for us; if for instance, we were accounting majors and found our marketing internship to be much more interesting, then we may change career paths. I also liked and agreed with what Professor Zur pointed out that since accounting is the fundamental building block of business, it is best to start there and know that as accounting majors on the CPA track, we can still move into another field later on and our accounting experience would prove tremendously valuable in any business-related career we may take on in the future. In addition, I would like to point out how pragmatic the advice given was during this presentation and how easily applicable it was.

Overall, the presentation was fairly good. Good job Panel 1!

I certainly agree especially when they give first hand experience for the interviewers. I couldn’t believe people actually passed out! And on top of that some employers are actually “annoyed” with too much “thank you” letters or even notes. At least now I know I should limit myself with what I need to in an interviews. On top of that, Professor Zur was a previous professor of mine and he choose his family over anything, that is why I respect him so much that he is willing to give up his career for the sake of his family. Not a lot of grown adults can really say they would do the same for a family. But it was definitely a great idea to bring in Professor Zur. AWSESOME!!!

I was really impressed with this panel. They for sure set the bar very high for all panels to come. Its so hard to be the first group to go and Group number one made it look easy. This panel gave all the students some great advice for when we graduate and begin to network and look for jobs. I think Lindsey was the standout speaker because she works in HR and has some first hand experience in the interviewing and recruiting process and I found her advice most valuable. I also avidly enjoyed the humor that Lindsey and Kurt brought to the panel. I wish Joseph could have talked a little bit more because he was closer to my age and I wish he had talked more about his experiences in looking for a job and how he got the current job he has today. I thought the topic was original and something that everyone in the class could gain value from. One criticism I have is that sometimes I felt the questions/responses became a little repetitive at times and that there was no closing statement. But overall I thought this was a really good opening panel! Great Job Everyone!

After listening to the first Panel’s presentation, I enjoyed the Panel speakers very much especially Kurt Kraeger. All the Panel speakers gave us great advice on how to look for our first job after graduating, how we should approach interviews, and how our careers will change once we exit college. Kurt Kraeger told us to clean up our Social Networking websites especially if we have a profile picture showing us holding an alcoholic beverage since it is not professional. Professor Emanuel Zur told us the reason he is now teaching and no longer working for a corporate company was because he did not like working until 3 AM certain days especially during tax season and did not want that type of work lifestyle to interfere with his family life. I took this information as advice because as we become older and as we may choose to get married, there will be a necessity to balance one’s work and family life. Overall, I found the Panel speakers to being very helpful and insightful as to what we should do as college students now and looking into the future.

I very much enjoyed the speakers from the first presentation. I found Mr. Kraeger to be not only an excellent speaker, but one who gives great advice as well. He provided the class with an interesting perspective from a recruiter’s point of view, and being that the majority of the class is beginning to look for summer internships and full time employment, i found the information he provided to resonate well with the class. Ms Edelson gave great advice as well when she said that we should choose a job that we will love. I agree that this is a very important aspect of succeeding in not only the business world, but in like as well, because one will not be happy if they are not doing what they love. Overall I enjoyed the speakers and advice they gave the class.

I thought the first panel was really informational and as an accounting major, it provided a fantastic networking opportunity. Friedman and KPMG are two firms that I’m really interested it, so to receive advice from the HR coordinator and an associate respectively was very helpful. I thought the story of Kurt Kraegar’s success was remarkable; he did not take a conventional career route by any means and because of those experiences, he remains humble even as a high-level executive. It was really inspiring and a bit comforting to know that all the different moments in his life eventually connected and led him to his current position. I respect Professor Zur as well for following his passions despite his mother’s criticism. I often feel parental pressure to conform to their idea of what my career should be and I admire that Prof. Zur did not let that hold him back.
For future panel presentations, I recommend that the groups prepare diversified questions. The panelists often answered several questions in one response and it became a bit repetitive for some time.

  7. yuliya.gumerovaon Nov 7th 2010 at 11:12 pm

The pressure is at its peak when it is the first presentation, but group #1 did an amazing job. Their focus was on recruiting which is what most of the class is interested in since most students are looking for jobs and going on interviews. It was a very informative presentation but some parts were a bit confusing. The two recruiters, Kurt Kraegar and Lindsay Edelson, had different views on who they would hire based on networking. Mr. Kraegar thought there was nothing wrong with cold calling and emailing CEO’s when you have never met them while Ms. Edelson advised us to only email people we have already met. I agree more with Ms. Edelson’s approach. Both of the recruiters gave very insightful information. All in all, group #1’s presentation was a great example of how each of our presentations should be.

  8. Rachel Rosenthalon Nov 8th 2010 at 4:09 pm

I thought this presentation was very well run in terms of the timing and amount of questions and the variety of the speakers. I especially liked to hear from Kurt Kraegar about his experience because his career path veered from the normal route people take. I thought the professor also gave a great perspective because he was an accountant that gave up the profession to spend more time with his family, which I find admirable. I think overall, the topic was very good and the choice of speakers was excellent.

  9. ilya.peysakhovon Nov 8th 2010 at 6:28 pm

I think this was a great panel and the topic was very appropriate. I think every speaker could relate to the students and and gave great advice on what steps to take and not to take in our careers. I also liked the fact that each speaker had a different background and was in a different place, for instance Kurt being in a senior position at his company and Joseph still a newcomer who has a lot to learn but also gave great advice. I also liked what Professor Zur said. I think he had valuable words considering the fact that he was involved in so many different fields before he finally found something he liked. Kurt and Lindsey i thought gave very helpful interview advice , because they are both different people and expect different things from the people they interview, so it was nice to get a wholesome perspective.
Overall i think the group did a great job in not only finding appropriate speakers for the class but also a diverse panel that really complemented their topic. A lot of what the speakers talked about from how they started out, to the choices they made to change their careers really resonated with me and helped me see things differently. Great job group #1.

  10. yuriy.minchuk1on Nov 8th 2010 at 8:53 pm

Certainly, it is never easy being the first one up. I must say though that Team #1 did a great job with all this pressure being put on them. I think that their topic was carefully chosen seeing as there are quite a lot of students in the class who are accounting majors. Although I am a Finance major, I still found the responses of their four panelists quite interesting. Kurt Kraeger and Lindsay Edelson clearly played a leading role in the presentation. They were both very engaging and eager to speak, and this is conducive to an exciting panel. This is not to say of course that Professor Zur and Joseph Juntereal did not have any valuable input, which they did. However, when it comes down to having the most effective panel, I think it might have been smarter to have only Kurt and Lindsay as the panelists. There were several instances where Emanuel and Joseph seemed almost out of place and thwarted by the other two speakers. Nonetheless, the panel was informative and well-planned. Good job Team #1!

Great panel! All the guest speakers are interesting and the topic was very helpful. I like how they taught us about what we should choose in order to be success. As they were sharing their experiences, we can see that all these speakers had tried different jobs in their career field to see which kind of job that they really belonged to. Especially Kurt and Lindsey, they fully explained every details in their career and how they would solve problems. Also, many of us are familiar with Professor Zur that we all know he has great understanding about accounting. Overall I was very enjoyed participating this panel and I learned alot from it!

It is very refreshing to listen to a panel that is 100% relative to me. I think we are all currently in a time of stress and we often ask ourselves a million questions to see if what we are doing now will be beneficial to us in the future. The four speakers provided us with valuable information in relation to choosing careers, proper etiquette etc. The speakers were laidback, honest and very knowledgeable in not only their field but in the stuff we care about- like does our GPA really matter? Group 1 did a great job-especially by leading off the panels.

  14. eric.thaion Nov 8th 2010 at 11:06 pm

I believe this panel presentation gave us important and valuable information that we all need before entering the workforce. This panel gave a preview of how it would be for all of us after graduating Baruch and entering the workforce. Lindsay Edelson gave us many important interviewing tips that many of us overlook when engaging in interviews. Simple mistakes such as being late and not owning up to our mistakes, she says can be detrimental. Although I’m not an accounting major, I felt it was very important that Professor Zur explained that accounting is a job that might keep one away from their family, which gives people who want to go into accounting a warning about their possible lifestyle. Overall the presentation was well executed, and gave us important information that we all could use when entering the workforce.

  15. Justin Shenon Nov 9th 2010 at 5:00 am

I think this panel served as the perfect example for what future presentations should be like. It was funny, engaging and gave us plenty of information as to how to carry ourselves throughout our college years in order to be prepared and not overstressed. Mr. Kurt Kraegar was especially engaging as he was very relaxed and able to connect with us, the audience, while giving relevant advice to our college careers. The panelists taught us to balance work and family and also to be aware of the impact of our social lives on the internet. It was a very well-executed panel even though the panelists were not well-balanced.

  16. liaton Nov 9th 2010 at 8:54 am

I believe that the panel was truley helpful. At this point of our lives (junior/senior year) we must decide on a major and some of us believe that once we declare a major it is written in stone and would be difficult to change it. However, after listening to this panel I understand that majors can be changed, and we dont always need to follow the career path that we are choosing right now. Careers can always be changed and it is important to fully understand the aspect of every job we look into.
The speakers were very informed and knowledgeable in what they were saying, and their advise was given in a way that would help everyone remember and apply it to our own lives.

  17. katerina.kozlukovaon Nov 9th 2010 at 11:46 am

Very good panel! All the guest speakers were very knowledgeable and the topic was very interesting. Many of us will be graduating soon. Thus I find the topic very helpful. The presentation was well organized, run smoothly and enjoyable. Group #1 prepared a good amount of questions, so the speakers were going through many different topics. Considering the amount of the time they were given to answer all the questions all the speakers managed to cover all the possible problems we will encounter during our careers. I liked Mr. Kurt Kraeger and Ms. Lindsay Edelson the best. Since they are both recruiters they provided us with great advices in terms of our job/internship search. I loved Ms. Edelson advice that we should look for a job that we will love. I completely agree with her. It’s very painful to do a job, which you don’t love in a long term. Overall I enjoyed this panel and learned alot from it!

  18. Joseph Hernandezon Nov 9th 2010 at 12:27 pm

It was a very informative panel. I was actually drawn to Kurt Kraeger being that he was prior military. He honestly stood out amongst the whole panel. Not to discredit the other guest but he definitely upheld that panel for group 1. Great guy

  19. valeria.quitoon Nov 9th 2010 at 7:17 pm

Great Panel. I really enjoyed the practical informations that each speaker had to give. They were able to give us advice from different stand point. Kurt Kraeger gave his perspective as someone who had achieved so much. Lindsay as well, had plenty to say about the interview process and what is that they look for. I found this to be incredibly useful as a junior in college who is looking to gain experience in the workforce. Really good job.

  20. joyce.tseon Nov 9th 2010 at 8:33 pm

I honestly think that this panel is just like any other typical panel that gives pretty much the same advice over and over again. It is, no doubt, very informational, but at the same time, very redundant and very as-a-matter-of-fact. First of all, I barely remember who Joseph Juntereal was, except the fact that he was sick. Second, the professor Emanuel Zur pretty much gave me a sense that a job will be boring and it will suck, so just suck it up and deal with it. Lindsay Edelson gave us a really good idea of what goes through an interviewer’s mind when she interviews someone. But since I’ve done quite a lot of research in terms of job searching and resume building myself, I didn’t really absorb anything new from her part. Kurt Kraeger was the one who really push the panel forward. The way he carried himself showed us how much experience he has. And of course, the fact that he told us how he gets to tell Ivy League hires that he went to a non-Ivy League school and is now a president most definitely won us over.

  21. corey.trippiedion Nov 9th 2010 at 9:00 pm

Overall, I thought this panel discussion was conducted very well. The advice given by the panelists pertains to our lives as college students, so I felt personally enlightened and enthralled by the topics discussed. I’ve been struggling with settling on a major and whatnot, so I was glad to hear that it’s possible to be successful in life even with overhanging indecision.

Mr. Kraeger was particularly interesting. Serving in the military and then beginning college at the age of 21 was something new to me. With all of the pressure on us to begin our careers and obtain internships, it’s nice to know that success isn’t strictly a product of planning.

Some criticisms. I felt that there might have been too many panelists, with the discussion being dominated by Mr. Kraeger and Ms. Edelson. The two panelists sitting on the outside seemed somewhat out of place and without things to say. Perhaps the questions should have been more universal to encourage participation from all panelists.

    Overall, very good.

  22. jessica.tobonon Nov 9th 2010 at 11:54 pm

I believe that this panel was well-organized in terms of the speakers and the topic. Personally, I am not an accounting major so at times I was a bit uninterested but overall I liked the advice that the panelists had to offer.
My favorite panelists were Mr. Kraeger and Ms. Edelson. Their advice was very insightful and although I have heard some of the points that they mentioned before, I still found them to be useful.
As far as criticisms, I would have to say that a few of the questions were repetitive and the speakers were limited in their answers. Also, I would have liked for the speakers to focus a little more on their actual experiences in college and not just in the work world. This group definitely did a good job and set a good tone for the rest of the panels.

  23. martin.hoffsteinon Nov 10th 2010 at 9:42 am

I really enjoyed this topic. I am considering finance as my major, which is very similar to accounting. it was interesting to see the point of views from established people in this field. I thought that the panelists were diversified and i though that was great because it brought more to the table and to the groups subject matter. Mr. Kraeger and Ms. Edelson were perfect compliments of each other. It was if they knew each other prior to coming to our class and the presentation. They constantly were feeding off each other, and their knowledge and experience showed in the way they presented them selves. I thought it was interesting to hear the different levels that each panelist holds. and the information they relayed to us regarding our future, and how we can better our image and ourselves to successfully obtain our career goal was perfect. Hearing what these established individuals look for, will definitely serve our class to better our image and pre-knowledge prior to applying and interviewing for a job. The questions and the panel as well was greatly organized and the group did an unbelievable job.

  24. li.tanon Nov 10th 2010 at 12:47 pm

In my opinion, team 1 had a really good topic. Because most of the class is graduating in a few years, we are interested in knowing which steps we should take before we are pushed into the real world. It was a good panel to set an example for the future groups because they had diversity, including a president of a company, a recruiter, and a professor. Having four speakers seemed to work quite well with the presentation; however, I felt at some occasions, Ms Edelson and Mr. Kraeger took over the panel and totally shadowed the other two. Both of them gave good advice as to how to approach a job and interview and how to act after that. These advices were somewhat repetitive since I’ve heard it many times throughout college, but hearing it from a recruiter’s mouth really put some credibility in it. In addition, the panelists also encouraged us to look for something we will love because most of us will probably spend more time at work than at home. However, professor Zur really contradicted this comment and gave us a gloomy, realistic comment about our futures–we can’t really find jobs that we love. Regarding the questions, I really felt that some of them were repetitive, which put the panelists in an awkward position. These questions were typically asked one after the other and it seems that they literally JUST answered the questions. In addition to the questions being repetitive and not projected enough, the panelists often had a hard time deciphering which of them would speak first (it usually ended up being Mr. Kraeger). Overall, this panel was informative and the topic was interesting. In one way or another, it made me more prepared for future interviews.

  25. Dianaon Nov 10th 2010 at 12:51 pm

I really liked the topic and believe it was relevant to all of us in class, given the circumstances that we all are pursuing different majors. I am sure everyone left the presentation with something new to apply to their lives. In my case I made sure to pay extra attention when they were giving tips about interviews.
The back ground of the guests also speaks highly. In my opinion the most interesting background was Mr. Kraeger’s.
I noticed that two of the guests were feeling “lost”. They didn’t speak that much and still when they did I felt they were “out of context”.
Finally, I think the first group did a great job. After all, it is not easy being the first group to present.

  26. Anaon Nov 10th 2010 at 2:25 pm

I really enjoyed this panel and appreciate all the practical information they gave to us. However, as an accounting major, I feel like the interviewing tips and advice was a little redundant because it seems to be heard everywhere. It was nice to hear their personal experience as well as the stories that they shared with us. One weakness to the panel is that some of the panelists seemed to talk more than the others. I felt like I only heard Mr. Juntereal and Professor Zur talk once. Nevertheless, great panel.

  27. shubkarmen.kauron Nov 10th 2010 at 5:56 pm

This was a panel that I think any college student would be able to relate to. Group 1 did an awesome job picking out their panelists. WE all make mistakes and it was a great idea to bring in those who are successful in the business industry to teach us what to look out for and what not to do so we can be successful in life. Since it was a 4 person panel I felt like not everyone had a chance to speak equally and share their thoughts. The panel was mostly lead by Mr. Kraeger and Ms. Edelson. Without a doubt, these were really fascinating people and gave really good advice on how to prep for interviews, how not to get annoying while trying to get a job, and especially how to try to find a job that we will enjoy going to everyday. I just wish the other two panelists would speak up more and also give their insights.
Overall, I think this was organized, but it could have flowed better. But since it was the first group to present, I think is gave a clear understanding to other groups on what to look out for and what to expect on the day of their own presentation.

  28. gabriela.guazcoon Nov 10th 2010 at 7:44 pm

Overall, it was a good presentation. I really enjoy the information the panelists shared with us. I think that Kurt Kraeger and Lindsay Edelson were better than the other two panelists. They shared good information with us, they knew what they were answering and were confident of themselves. Good god group 1

  29. mickey.abbatielloon Nov 10th 2010 at 10:13 pm

Overall the presentation was good. I thought that the information displayed is important for us students because we are at the stage of going on interviews. Kurt Kreager was a very engaging panelist and I thought he dominated the panel along with Lindsay Edelson. Even though there has been many presentations on this type of information before it is always good to hear other peoples advice on the topic. The only things I did not like about the panel was that the group was sitting in the front row of the room and was not facing the audience while they were asking questions. This was a problem because it was difficult to hear the questions. Also I felt that other than Kurt and Lindsay the other two panelist did not contribute and seemed unnecessary.

  30. magdalena.sikoraon Nov 11th 2010 at 3:31 pm

I think group 1 did a good job, considering the fact they were presenting first, without the comfort of learning on somebody else mistakes. What made it even more interesting was the topic which is very relevant to the course and to what Dr.Tawil emphasizes every single class. The advice from the panelists was helpful. I like the fact that even though they all had a lot to do with accounting, they were very coming from different fields, so each particular perspective was different. It was interesting to listen to them. It seems like there is never enough to be said about job search., interviewing and networking. Group 1 could have worked more on the choice of questions- avoid asking questions that were already answered, and moderate them on-the-go, but I still consider the panel as valuable and helpful experience.

It is always great to listen to a panel with first real-life hand experience for the interviewers because I’m a little exhausted with all this textbook information based classes we take at Baruch. The information overall was not mind-blowing but useful for interviews. Kurt was the best panelist and was really engaging, while two of the other three panelists really didn’t speak much because Kurt was the one with the best answer for most of the questions. The questions were decent but some were overlapping a little bit. I would say I’m satisfied with the presentation at best.

I think Group 1 did a great job with their panel. Being the first group to present, they set high standards for the following groups. I liked that the topic was something that everyone in the class can relate to. Considering that everyone has given at least one interview or will be giving interviews in the future, it was good to hear what should be done and what should be avoided. This gave me along with everyone else, im sure, a good insight on how to prepare better when looking for future jobs and internships and how to make ourselves stand out. I did think that some of the questions were repetitive and future groups should be aware of that. Overall, I thought it was a great topic to start off the rest of the panels.

  34. thewiz94on Nov 13th 2010 at 10:23 pm

I greatly enjoyed this panel discussion. A lot of the advice that was given can be used to help me and everyone else in the future. I thought that the panelists as well as those hosting the panel were all very professional and should be complimented on their success. I very much enjoyed the presentations given by Kurt Kraeger. He seemed to be very successful in a not so orthodox way, which shows us that life doesn’t always turn out the way you would expect it to. I thought that the other panelists were good as well, and it renewed my confidence that I can do well in life as long as I try hard. Though I am not an accounting major, I thought the panel was helpful. Even though the speakers have done well in their fields, the talk makes me happy that I chose a different career path.

  35. dlamon Nov 14th 2010 at 2:42 am

This panel had it’s ups and downs, but overall, I found the panel to be rather informative and entertaining. I really enjoyed Kurt Kraeger’s contributions and found him to be very funny. It was really encouraging to see someone with his past and background to still manage to be successful, which shows that despite one’s history, you can still change what happens tomorrow. However, along with the other responses here, I felt the Professor and the new/young KPMG panelist were rather dull and uninteresting. That was my only gripe with the panel.

  36. alyssa.ipon Nov 14th 2010 at 1:31 pm

I like how easygoing this panel was! The questions you asked were very open-ended and the responses from all the panelists were great (the professor did seem a bit glum though…). It was great to hear about how everyone got started in their professions, and most of the panelists really did seem to enjoy what they were doing. The thing I really got out of the panel was the idea that life is unpredictable–while it is good to have a plan in life, you should always leave room for spontaneity!

  37. Zhoudion Nov 14th 2010 at 7:16 pm

For the first presentation I thought it was amazing. The topic was relevant not just in terms of it being a management topic but also as a personal topic. As a panelist I thought Mr. Kraeger was great. He was funny and also very realistic and honest with his responses. The presentation level was greatly raise due to his contribution to each question. At no point was I bored of the topic or of what the panelists had to contribute to the discussion. The group was set up very evenly having one person introduce and then one person at a time to ask a question to create the sense of a team at work. Overall I enjoyed the presentation very much and the topic as well.

  38. Robert Salameon Nov 14th 2010 at 10:05 pm

Overall, I think it was a good presentation. The information that was mentioned throughout the panel is very helpful to all people, not only as potential business people, but as individuals also. It is important to know that our careers are always subject to change, and as educated people we have to be able to deal with those changes. Group 1 did a great job in bringing in speakers who are successful business people, who are now in fields that they did not originally choose. It taught us how we can always change the direction we are going in, and it is not a crime to do so.
The questions were very applicable to our every day lives.
The answers were even better, in informing us of something that not everyone wants to acknowledge- the fact that there will always be obstacles, and we will have to change the path that we are on.
    Overall, good presentation.

  39. jcunneenon Nov 14th 2010 at 10:17 pm

I thought Kurt was an absolute blast. He was personable and had some great stories. Lindsay had great advice as well. Even though the panel revolved around accounting, I was able to take away some very important points about interview etiquette and the importance of networking. The hours of an accountant seem rather rigorous and I don’t expect to be going into the field myself. However, they all did have a passion for what they do which is what really counts.

  40. darina.goulashvilion Nov 15th 2010 at 12:30 pm

I thought this was a great panel to begin with. As a senior, I often find myself looking back at these past 3 years and evaluating what I’ve learned, what I’m walking away with, and what I could have done more efficiently. I loved that each panelist had a unique experience and therefore had unique advice to give us. I do wish that the panelists spoke in order but aside from that, the presentation was an overall success. A number of people mentioned how great Kurt was, and I absolutely agree. He was really energetic and made me realize that we don’t necessarily need to know what we want to do when we come out of college, it’s more about the path we take and how we go about following our interests.

  41. fuxin.zhengon Nov 15th 2010 at 3:02 pm

it was a very good panel. and it was good to hear what should be done and what should be avoided. All the Panel speakers gave us great advice on how to look for our first job after graduating, how we should approach interviews, and how our careers will change once we exit college. They did a very good job.

  42. yafeng.chenon Nov 15th 2010 at 8:26 pm

I think it was a very good panel with some very interesting panelists. it was a very good presentation overall. I feel Kurt Kraeger is an execellent speaker and I want to speak to him more about life at work and more advice while I am in college. I would also ask Lindsay Edelson on how to performed better during interview. It was a great experience to see the panel.

  43. adriana.quizhpion Nov 16th 2010 at 3:08 pm

I really enjoy listening to this panel, because the topic was very relevant to us, since at this point in life we need a lot of advises to make the right decisions. I would say that the most interesting part was the discussion about interviews, since most of us are looking for jobs and/or internships. I think that it’s good to hear more details about what interviewers think or want to see from candidates, since sometimes; very small details can make a big difference. The panelists were very knowledgeable and they contributed with very informative information, that I’m sure we all will be making use of. Even though some of the questions were repetitive, the panel was very well organized. Good Job.

  44. victoria.olivaon Nov 16th 2010 at 3:11 pm

I liked the title and the idea of this whole presentation. I always want to know what kind of advice people in business could give to us college students if they had to do it all over again. This panel was effective because it was relevant to everyone in the room. The speakers were lively and held nothing back. I think we all freak out a bit being college students but these speakers helped to ease our worries with excellent advice and reassurance. I didn’t however like how the students asked the questions because they weren’t facing the audience and were very difficult to hear.

  45. joseph.francoon Nov 16th 2010 at 4:39 pm

I feel like in order to be successful in an interview the most important thing to do is learn the interviewer. Only once you know the personality of the person interviewing you can you decide on how to follow up. I enjoyed the advice on interviewing most of all from the presentation.

  46. efraim.maubanon Nov 16th 2010 at 7:01 pm

There were many tips and advice given in this panel that I think is applicable to everyone specially the people in the business world. It was great having these panelists come in and help us know more about the work place and what recruiters look for and also what young graduates should be looking for in a career.
A few of the tips though were obvious ones and I think it would have been more interesting to give more unique tips. Maybe some tips from the panelist’s own experiences or one’s they know of.

  47. xavia.ortegaon Nov 16th 2010 at 11:38 pm

Find what you love to do and do it. That is one of the main points I learned from this panel. If you are not happy leave because it will show in your work.
I believe the panelist were good. Lindsay and Kurt were the ones that spoke the most and were the most informative. You can tell that Emmanuel was very shy, but when he spoke he did say some pretty important points. The odd ball out in the panel, I felt was Joseph. I thought he would have a lot to say based on his experience since he was closer to our age.
Although Lindsay and Kurt had different opinions on some of their preferences, it just teaches you that you must be on your toes and try to pick up what your interviewer is like.
The only bad thing I can say about this panel is that they just read questions off a sheet of paper. Sometimes the students would ask questions that the panel would already have answered. Overall I think this panel did a great job. I liked this panel because it applied to everyone in the class. GREAT JOB, especially since you went first!!!!!

  48. shailleen.rodriguezon Nov 17th 2010 at 2:57 pm

I was really impressed by this first panel.. Everything was organized and the panel was interesting considering that all three panelist were from very diverse fields. The topic was also very relevant to the class, and since we all are college students we all benefit from the advice that the panelist were able to give. Although some of the things said were constantly said throughout the course, the group cant be blamed for it; the panelist aren’t in the class to know these things. You guys did a great job.

  49. viorika.rybak99on Nov 17th 2010 at 7:00 pm

I think this panel set the bar pretty high, especially being the first team to do this. I found Mr. Kraeger to be a very entertaining speaker as he did not seem to compose himself at all, he spoke whatever was on his mind. I also feel like Mr. Kraeger and Ms. Edelson dominated the panel, they spoke the most time, had more advice and I think I personally enjoyed listening to them the most. I think the other fact that made this panel great was that because they did not only get professionals from the field, but also recruiters, to give us their points of view and the qualities they look for when recruiting. This was probably very very useful to listen to for those students who are majoring in accounting. I really enjoyed this panel and I found it entertaining, very organized and professional. The other groups definitely have something to strive for!

  50. jyuan412on Nov 18th 2010 at 6:19 pm

What a great first panel! The panelists were enthusiastic, engaging, informative and entertaining. It DID set the par high! And the topic could not have been more relatable to us college kids who are so unsure of how to handle things in the corporate world. I found the interview section particularly useful because I have my own method of handling an interview but to hear if from the perspective of the interviewer gives it the experience a whole new light. I’ll be sure to be aware of how I act and may come across as in future interviews. I also liked how uncorporate they acted as well. It gave the panel a comfortable feel to it.

  51. yongru.chenon Nov 18th 2010 at 11:38 pm

Let’s all give credits to Lucky who found these amazing panelists. It was really thoughtful of him to invite recruiters to the panel to teach us about first hand interview experience. We put a lot of effort into this panel and hope you guys all enjoyed it.

  52. susan.sullon Nov 20th 2010 at 9:11 pm

Great start to the panel assignment! I really enjoyed the question and answers by both panelists and speakers. I learned a lot about this topic especially about the interview process. Although I wished I could have heard the closing statement, the over presentation was eventful. Mr. Kraeger and Ms. Edelson definitely were engaging about the questions asked and knew the right way to present the answer to the questions. You can even tell from Mr. Kraeger that he had notes in his hands that had him prepared for the questions. Everyone from the class connected with them and felt very comfortable asking questions and knew that these two people were the ones to ask about the topic at hand. I wished Mr. Juntereal and Zur had connected more with the class. I’m pretty sure that they had experiences, just that they couldn’t connect with the class. Again, great job panel #1!

  53. Cameron Moon Nov 21st 2010 at 3:14 pm

I really enjoyed this panel. It gave a great insight into the minds of the recruiters and how they actually recruit and what they are looking for. Everything was relevant because we will all soon be entering into the job market and will face similar situations in the not to distant future. Mr. Kraeger and Ms. Edelson definitely shone the brightest during the panel, giving us the most (valuable) information

  54. albertsanmiguelon Nov 21st 2010 at 5:31 pm

This panel had great speakers that had a lot of advice that benefits me. I learned so much about what to do during interviews and what type of mindset I should have as a job seeking individual. Being an accounting major, I heard a lot of things that will help me in the future.

  55. russell.muradovon Nov 21st 2010 at 11:04 pm

It’s never easy going first because you’re always at a disadvantage. Nonetheless I feel like group 1 did a great job. I feel like every student could relate to what the panelists said one way or another. Lindsay Edelson gave great advice for interviews and how hand-written thank you letters go a long way to show that you’re persistent and unique. She also mentioned that you can’t have the same thank you letters for everybody because they do compare them. Kurt Kraeger in my opinion took control of the panel. He is an excellent speaker and his story was remarkable. He seems like a great mentor and I would definitely take his advice. Mr. Juntereal and Professor Zur also had great things to say but their quite personalities were quickly overshadowed. Overall, this panel was great.

  56. tiffany.chihon Nov 22nd 2010 at 12:08 pm

I thought this panel was relatively awesome. All the panelists had really great advice to give us regarding making future career decisions, and the importance of networking and such. I especially like Lindsey’s advice on interviewing techniques, and I thought that those were really helpful. I also thought it was nice for every member of the team to ask different questions. I wished that all panelists talked a lot, and not just let two of them lead the Q&A session though.

  57. amanda.medinaon Nov 22nd 2010 at 8:47 pm

I thought this panel was very informative. I really love hearing people say that you should go after what you love instead of being stuck in a dead-end career and miserable, so I was happy that the Professor made that point. I thought that the questions were put together well and the panelist in return answered the questions the best that they could. There were two speakers that didn’t speak as much, which left me a little disappointed, but overall the advice given I thought was helpful, and I think we can all learn something from this. For being the first panel to go on and present I thought they did fairly well.

  58. yeeun.kimon Nov 26th 2010 at 10:40 pm

It was the first panel presentation and I think group 1 had a lot of pressure. However, the topic was wonderful and I found it really interesting and helpful. More than that, this panel was realistic. As a student myself, I sometimes have doubts about my future career and if I’m on the right track, or what should I do to survive. This panel helps me to organize my thoughts and to get ready for the real world. Especially, the interview advice and the importance of networking were really good advices.

  59. vincent.cianciarusoon Nov 28th 2010 at 11:54 pm

I think our group did well for being the first group. I feel like our speakers were able to convey a good message to the class about life experiences and advice for the future. The class seemed to be interested in what our panel was about so thats a good thing! I agree that maybe we could have had one less speaker but overall i think we did a good job. I hope everyone enjoyed our panel and benefited from what every panelist had to offer to the class.

  60. teodulo.lopezon Nov 29th 2010 at 12:36 am

Great panel! I noticed that all panelists were very enthused to speak about their careers. As a result of this, everything the panelists discussed was well taken by my part. Goob job on finding great speakers by team number one!

  61. Inapton Nov 29th 2010 at 10:54 am

A very good first panel presentation. The topic was well picked and im sure something everyone in the class could relate to. I am sure everyone in the class could have used the advice regarding various aspects of college. Each panelist gave great advice regarding networking, future career decisions, and interviews. Overall I’d say it was a very good panel presentation that really set a bar for every following presentation to follow.

  62. helen.shiuon Nov 29th 2010 at 1:44 pm

I thought our group did well and the panelists invited fitted well with the topic chosen. The panelists had various backgrounds and knowledge. A point stated by one of the panelists that left an impression on me was that we will probably not know what we want to do once we graduate. It will take time and effort to find what we truly want to do in life. Lindsay Edelson suggested we take all the opportunites that come our way because we will never know what will come out of it. I think some of us take for granted the opportunties that are available to us because we think there will be many more in the future. I also learned what recruiters look for in a candidtate and how I should conduct myself in future interviews. One thing that would have made the panel better was if we had a concluding statement and some key points.

  63. Oleg Polovetson Nov 30th 2010 at 3:51 pm

I think the panel was great. Even though my major isn’t accounting, I found this presentation to be very informative. One of the main points I got out of this panel was people from the same field can end up in very different positions, like being a college professor or being in HR.

  64. jiaying.lion Dec 1st 2010 at 10:45 am

As an accounting major I felt that the advice given to me by the panelists was great. Even for the people that aren’t in the accounting field I think there was still information they could have used. The tips for the interviews were a nice bonus as well so all in all I thought it was a very good presentation.

  65. edwin.lion Dec 2nd 2010 at 4:31 pm

This panel presentation very informative for us, as students who are about to graduate and for those who are already working part time in a business environment. The panelists gave us a lot of advice on how to behave while on the job or at an interview. This part was especially helpful. One piece of advice that Lindsay Edelson gave was to only email people regarding job openings only if you have met them previously. I do not agree with Ms. Edelson because without cold calling and emailing companies you can miss out on many opportunities. Although emailing random companies may not be as personal, there is still a slight chance the employer may respond. I especially liked Professor Zur’s advice about the accounting profession and how knowledge and skill acquired on the job can translate to other fields as well. One other piece of advice that he gave was to do what you like and I respect him a great deal for taking a job which pays less to have more time for himself and his family.

  66. interlocutoron Dec 2nd 2010 at 4:35 pm

When putting the panelists together, we considered many different topics. We came to the conclusion that not only would the topic of having panelists give us their feedback be interesting, but it would also be useful for our futures. Therefore, we asked to have them speak about things they wish they knew that they didn’t know back in college.
I felt that the presentation overall was well organized. We had a plan and we stuck to it. We purposely seated our group in the front so that when the panelists answered the questions, our classmates would feel that the panelists are talking to everyone in the class rather than just us, the group members.
Also, although people may feel that it is better to ask panelists individual questions to a respective person, our group felt it would be better to ask a question and have all four of the panelists answer the question – our group agreed when it one suggested that every single person’s input is as important as the other. Therefore, we wanted to see each persons perspective on the questions we asked.
If there was one thing I could have changed about the presentation, it would probably have to have been to make our presentation itself a little shorter. At the end of the class, there were still a couple of questions that students wanted to ask which were not answered. Therefore, if we had left more time for students to answer questions, then it may have been a better presentation overall.

  67. oksana.poweon Dec 3rd 2010 at 1:38 pm

The presentation was very informative and well organized. The panelists gave great advices about the interview process, and I had a feeling that I was listening to the topic about recruiting :). But it was very useful and informative. I was glad to hear form the professionals about the process of interview and recruiting though! The panelists were interesting and engaging in sharing their experiences and stories. The important point I got from this was that it is OK to change the industres, to restart your career in a different area, and it is important to find a field where you will feel happy, confident and passionate about. By being the first group presenting, the group did a great job!

  68. mirlinda.djecbitricon Dec 4th 2010 at 11:53 am

Our panel did a pretty good job i think. We had a diverse group of people which was a good thing and it seemed as if each person had something to put in, giving the class advice. Our goal was to try to be as informative as we can so that each student took something away from the presentation. Since we did have questions at the end it seems like we reached our goal. After reading these posts as well, the majority felt our panel was informative and gave a good amount of advise we can take with us now as we are still college students. One thing I would have changed was the ending. We ran short on time and never gave a closing statement or key points. Also, we did not have Professor Tawil there that day to give his short statements as he usually does. Other than that, it was a great panel to be apart of, as well as one to listen to.

  69. Marco Sardaron Dec 6th 2010 at 11:20 am

i think this panel was good, because i was able to hear individuals who were once in my shoes talk about their past and what they thought they did right and wrong. this was important because i was able to understand what i as a student should be doing and should not be doing in order to best position myself for a job or internship that i want. overall i thought this was a great start to jumpstarting my understanding of what i need to do.

  70. Boris Ermison Dec 6th 2010 at 3:21 pm

I enjoyed group one’s presentation very much. I am a Finance major, however having individual’s in the Accounting field inform me of the business world was helpful, nonetheless. The questions presented by the group were well thought through. Kurt and Lindsey had the most input regarding the presentation by talking about specifics in the Accounting field. Professor Zur, on the other hand, preferred to speak about his dislikes in the Accounting field. He made it clear that the rough hours in Accounting are not for everyone, like for people like him. In conclusion, the group did a good job on informing us about their topic and thanks to them for that!

  71. dshea.ollivierreon Dec 7th 2010 at 10:24 am

I think that this was one of the better presentations we have seen in class, especially considering that fact that you guys were the first group. This topic was a good one to choose because I think that it is applicable to everyone regardless of major. I thought that Lindsay and Kurt were really good speaker and gave us a good idea in how prospective employers look at us when we come in to interviews. The only negative I can think about this panel is that there was no closing statement because you all ran out of time, other than that great.

  72. raphael.biloiricion Dec 8th 2010 at 11:59 am

This group was at a severe disadvantage from the start. They were the first group to present, and weren’t sure exactly how to present in the best possible way. The group members all sat in the front row and no one could hear the questions being asked. After the first presentation, the remaining groups started asking questions to the panelists from the stage. Besides for this, I think the panel presentation was great. Mr Kraeger and Ms. Edelson worked extremely well together and were very informative. The advice Ms. Edelson gave on how to act on an interview helped every single person in the room. Overall very good.

  73. sheina.hakimion Dec 8th 2010 at 11:57 pm

Great Panel, although this group was the first to present they did exceptionally well and brought in professionals who were very helpful and gave very good advice to the students. They were also able to take the accounting aspect and make it applicable to every person in the room. Ms. Edelson taught us a lot about interviewing which is always important and Mr. Kraeger gave us a lot of advice on internship. Professor Zur also brought everything back into perspective when he mentioned how his family always comes first, which is something that people tend to forget.
    Good Job Team 1!!

  74. lucky.nguyenon Dec 11th 2010 at 5:30 pm

I thought out group did very well. The panelists and the panel topic is relevant to the class since the majority of the students are juniors. Many companies start recruiting interns in their junior year and this panel gave students an inside look to the professional world. Ms. Edelson and Kurt Kraeger gave their views from a recruiter standpoint and gave out many tips to the audience. Professor Zur and Joseph Juntereal gave real life advice that every student should adhere to. The personal experiences and the advice of every speaker on this panel should help give the audience an edge in their application and job search process. Overall, I thought our panel presentation was very fitting for the class and went very well.

  75. jeffwongon Dec 11th 2010 at 6:53 pm

I particularly enjoyed Mr. Kraeger’s and Ms. Edelson’s contribution to the panel as recruiters. Having worked in an executive placement firm for a number of years, I completely understood where they were coming from. The advice given about interviews and internships, although we all have heard it before, was welcome and well worth hearing again.

  76. melissalokon Dec 11th 2010 at 11:08 pm

The panelists gave a lot of advice very relevant to college students preparing for the work place. I learned a great deal about interviewing and enjoyed this panel discussion.

  77. Wojciech Balakieron Dec 12th 2010 at 10:35 am

The panelists in this presentation were very well chosen. The two recruiters, Ms. Edelson and Mr. Kraeger, gave the audience a fair portrayal of how the recruitment process occurs in many companies and what to do in order to keep yourself competative versus the field. Mr. Kraeger was by far the center piece of the presentation with his knowledge and sense of humor. I very much enjoyed to hear him speak. He took a very unorthodox route to becoming successful and made me realize that it’s not as important as to where you start but where you finish. I particularly loved the tips on networking and best behavior when emailing or calling people in order to give yourself the ability to make a great first impression.

  78. alina.Kidanovaon Dec 12th 2010 at 11:58 am

Group 1 did an amazing first job since we all know it is never easy to be the first group to present but they set the bar high for all the other panelist groups. Even though I am a finance major, the panelists discussion was very informative. Mr. Kraeger was very engaging in the discussion and had a very large presence in the group. All the other panelists were very informative as well. Professor Zur was one member that I believe this panelist could have avoided. Also, one important point I got from the presentation is how it is fine if you want to switch career paths as long as you push yourself into that direction. Amazing job group 1!!!
