NMA 2050

I have a lot to express right now after finishing the entire NMA 2050 section this semester.

Me at this moment really can proudly say I AM AN ARTIST. I was very confused regarding the concepts of new media arts, even after reading a few articles. However, after doing all those projects, I progressively understand and starting to enjoy the moment creating my own art pieces.

I feel like making art helps me knowing myself more, it helps me discovering the other side of me. I am satisfied with all the projects I have done so far, especially my final project. By learning more and more techniques on different softwares, I can express my feelings and imaginations in mind more concisely .

Moreover, I understand different people may have different sense looking at the same art piece, I feel so interested on knowing how people view things so differently.

After listening to quite a lot of different variety of sound examples, the one interested me most is György Ligeti – Étude Nr. 1 (“Harmonies”) (1967) from György Ligeti . From the reading of Russolo, musicians should free themselves from the traditional and seek to explore the diverse rhythms of noise, which means that there are many different levels of sound/ noise, we can try to listen to different kinds of sounds other than ordinary musics we used to listen to. For the sound example I pick, I felt attracted to it because of the uniqueness of the noise, it sounds like noise of steel, a bell, a consistency noise which makes me feel mystery, lost and psychedelic. Moreover, as mentioned in Russolo’s work, musicians should enlarge and enrich the field of sound by approaching the noise-sound and by using their creativity and innovation.

Russolo also describe noise into different families by dividing them into different criteria and how sounds were developed. At the very first, ancient life is silence, but with natural noise, such as waterfall, storm, it then created early sounds, which are sounds created by simple instruments, and then eventually turned into early “music”.

I truly believe that noise is a kind of musical art, sounds exist around us from time to time, place to place, no matter where you located, you can hear something, and which are considered as sound art.

I found Wark’s work very interesting, he point of view is very unique, which took me some time to understand it. For example, at the very beginning, he started the book by a sentence, “A double spooks the world, the double of abstraction.” He brings up a lot of new ideas and terms which kind of make me rethink a lot. From my understanding, he added two classes into the worker mix, which are the “hacker class” and the “vectoralist class”

At the first paragraph, he redefine the meaning of “hacker” as abstraction, hackers create new ideas, solution, and basically new “things” to the world by expending the raw data, and turn it into something really existing in the world. He brought up terms such as “intelligence property”, which was defined as something not necessary to be great or good, but new. Basically, everyone of us are “hackers” since we bring ideas into the world.

Before reading Wark’s work, I agree that I am like the many people who give hackers a bad reputation, as Wark describe as freaks and greeks. since hackers usually deal with what doesn’t belong to theirs, people would definitely define this act as illegal. Nevertheless, Wark views hackers in a completely new way, which explained that they are deserve for respects.

This is the self portrait of me, this piece of work completely express my feeling which cannot be expressed in words. There are more than one of “me” appearing in this picture, which none of them clearly shown my face but the outline, since sometimes i cannot see myself clearly, this show the moment of lost, blur vision of the future. I place the two “me” against each other because this is how I want to show when I use the third party view to observe how I am doing things.

After finishing this piece of work, I find that it is sometimes easier to express thoughts or feeling by visual artpiece than using words. I prefer using less color, which mainly black and white, as I found it more mystery. I didn’t add a lot of effects on this picture, I added the light effect on the right top corner to form a contrast, I darken the part of me on the left side and deigned on the placement. Every part of the image was being designed with thoughts, I hope people who see this image can understand me more.

After reading the “principle of new media”, I get to understand more about new media. New media is anything related to technology, image and sound. From my understanding, new media can be defined as digital. Nowadays, as technology integrated into our daily life more and more, we have no excuses to not to be in touch with new media. New medias exist everywhere in the world, appearing in different sorts of forms which involve digital interactivity, phones, tablets, computer…..

From the book, the Modularity part arouse my interest the most, it mentioned that “the objects themselves can be combined into even larger objects, without losing their independence.” It also provided the example of the movie produced and explained how it works. All elements from the movie, audio, sound effects, tons of images, small movie pieces are stored separately but loaded in the same time in order to present the whole “large” movie.

From this theory, I now understand more clearly of the structure of new media art, and how we can make the analogy between the modularity of the new media and structured computer programming.

On the 9/10, wednesday, we had a meeting with some artists, we saw some art work in the library.

For the first art work we saw, which was the drilling animation on the 1st floor. I love that art piece very much, especially after hearing the entire creating process. Without listening to the artist describing the whole preparation work, I never thought that there were so much work to be done before creating the animation. It looks like a normal ground grilling motion, but now I know that it requires research of the rocks types, their characteristics in an attempt to be realistic.

Besides, for the plastic project, I learnt a lot of different plastic materials and the formation. Before that day, I never know that plastic is classified into that much species. And after researching for the further use, I now understand what different kinds of plastics can be turned into different products and how are they being used. And because of this, I deeply realize the importance of recycling.
