What was the catalyst for your Mid-Career Transition?

As I approached my twentieth year as a New York City employee, I began to evaluate my employment situation and goals. I realized that I had not achieved all that I wanted to educationally in order to maximize my career potential. I returned to college and subsequently completed my undergraduate and graduate degrees. I am currently 3 classes from completion of a second graduate degree and am contemplating post graduate studies.

I believe that it is never too late to become who I want to be “when I grow up”. No matter what I do or how long it takes, at the end of the designated time (5, 10, 15 years), I will still be whatever age those years add so why not go after the degrees or careers that I envision.

There are uncertainties and a level of uneasiness about the prospect of leaving this employment. I am quite secure in knowing that I have 12 holidays, 12 sick days and 27 vacation days each year. Having job security is a warm blanket in this time of economic uncertainty. In spite of these things, I want MORE and am determined to get it.

What was the catalyst for your mid-career transition or decision? How do you feel about “starting over”? What do you tell yourself about this change?
