Getting Your Parents Involved in Your Learning

This first post in the resource section will try and connect with you personally. I hope it does and that you can share your story on the reply section of this page. Let this be an outlet that helps us understand each other in a collaborative way. My story may be similar to yours and I know that we can improve our Hispanic communities if we develop in unison. Change starts within your family’s wants to learn more about greater outlets of growth, which will be provided for you on my blog.

My parents emigrated from Colombia at the young age of 20 (mother) and 22 (father). They had my brother in 1983 and soon after had me (Miguelito) in 1985. My brother and I first learned to speak Spanish and it wasn’t until after we entered pre-kindergarten that we really began to learn the English language. Of course we knew some words from watching television in English and also from our family’s efforts, but we sure had to struggle while learning a whole new language in pre-kindergarten. Like many of you, my brother had to attend English as a Second Language (ESL) for extra help on his English language development.

For reasons being discovered, parents may lose sight over the responsibilities given to their children in early development by their schoolteachers. I aim to be a resource where I, along with my affiliated partners, can teach you to interact with your parents so that they can learn the English language along with you. Your parents have sacrificed a whole lot, leaving their families and friends behind, to give you a golden opportunity that may not have been available back in their homelands. I want to guide you and becoming a mentor and friend for you and your family will be an added feature.
