schedule, final exam date

August 30, 2012

We lose a couple classes in September – see the academic calendar for general details. I’ve given the info relevant to us below.

Our upcoming classes for the month of September are on the usual schedule except for Tue Sept 18 (Rosh Hashanah) and Tue Sept 25 (Yom Kippur), when there are no classes scheduled. October holds no schedule changes for us, and our midterm will likely be some time during the last two weeks of October (TBD). You should note the drop deadline of November 9. Then Thanksgiving gives us Thu Nov 22 off, and Wed December 11 is our last class. Thu Dec 13 is the Reading Day, and the current final exam schedule says our exam is on Thu Dec 20 from 10:30-12:30 PM.

Welcome to Calculus I

August 22, 2012

Welcome to Calculus I. I hope you pick up quite a bit from this course, not just the mathematical content. On this site and our course Blackboard site, I’ll post content that will be helpful (some of it mandatory, some of it simply for enrichment’s sake) to you throughout the semester.

I wanted to open with a short statement from the recently-late William Thurston, a mathematician (and Fields Medalist) from my undergrad alma mater, New College of Florida, speaking briefly about what mathematicians can actually do to contribute to the world of math.
