Ambi: Sounds of students talking in the background within the confines of a classroom.

Host Intro: Entering another year at Baruch, I caught up with a fellow student here entering his third year at Baruch College to discuss his experiences on campus, and online during the pandemic, as well as his overall background and lifestyle. I am now here with Daniel Andrade

Act: Daniel: My name is Daniel Andrade, I am majoring in Management of Musical Enterprises. This is my third year, but I am a senior and going to be finishing early.

Track: Although this is his third year at Baruch, Daniel has not been able to spend much time on campus due to the pandemic just like many other students that also spent most of their college life behind the cameras of their devices from their homes.

Act: Daniel: It’s been great, now being back in person, virtual wasn’t the best, I kinda disregarded everything and was just on my phone and didn’t really care, and now being back in person it’s great to be back for sure.

Track: He then continues on to explain his college experience now living in New York, after moving down here from upstate New York.

Act: Daniel: I am currently in the Bronx, up by 225th. Commute’s not bad, it’s around 45 minutes, it’s just taking one train down transferring at 42nd street, then taking the R/W to 23rd.

I grew up upstate through high school. I moved to the city right before the pandemic, which kind of sucked because I moved to the city to be around more people, and then the pandemic started.

Track: For Daniel, he is now grown fond of living in New York City, and finds the lifestyle here to be very different from the one he had lived upstate. Aiming to graduate this coming year with a degree in Management of Musical Enterprises, Daniel looks toward the future as he continues his studies at Baruch College. For Baruch College, I am Norbu Sherpa.

Audio Editing Workshop

Intro to Audio Editing

Audacity: Free to download.

Audacity shortcuts to know:

Play/pause: space bar
Split track: Command I
Zoom in: Command 1
Zoom out: Command 3

In the tool bar, this is the selection tool that allows you to click and highlight and delete sections of track or select a spot where you want to split it:

This is the tool that allows you to move sections of track:

And this is the one that lets you adjust the volume, basically the same way the pen tool works in Premiere:

In both programs, when you’re finished editing, you’ll need to export the finished sound file before you can upload it anywhere.

In Audacity, it’s File –> Export Audio –> select “WAV” from dropdown menu and give the file a name and location, then hit “Save” and “OK.”

Assignment: Using Audacity, mix your practice radio story according to the script you wrote from the interview you did with your classmate. Upload the exported WAV file to Soundcloud and add it to your blog post with the practice script. Due by class time on Thursday.

Your drafts of your scripts for your actual, NOT-practice radio story will be due next Thursday, Oct. 27 or Friday Oct 28, depending on when you schedule your edit session. Everyone will sign up for a one-on-one editing session with me Thursday or Friday. (We will not have class as usual that Thursday.) You can sign up for a time slot here, first come first served:

HOST INTRO: Taylor Swift is a highly accomplished and well-established singer-songwriter whose discography spans multiple genres, from Country to Alternative to Pop. She’s won 34 American music awards and is a few weeks away from releasing her tenth studio album. Swift’s success has allowed her to reach and impact millions of fans worldwide. Charlene Figueroa speaks to one of many devoted supporters about Swift’s influence on her life.

AMBI: Shuffling from students silently chatting and typing in the background.

TRACK: I’m joined by Samantha Sollito who, unsure of where to start with her love for Swift, decides to begin with when and why she became a huge fan. She explains to us how although she knew of her for a long-time it wasn’t until 2 years ago that she became interested in Swift’s music.

ACT: SAMANTHA: I really didn’t get into her music that much until 2020 when she surprised dropped folklore randomly in July. I’ve never hated her I genuinely liked her music I just never was such a huge fan like I am now. I feel like her lyricism and almost all of the stuff she puts out is genuinely some of the best music. And that’s not me being biased I genuinely think she has such a nac for song-writing.

TRACK: That nac Sollito tells us about has allowed Swift to truly relate to her audience. While many of her songs are from the perspective of a girl dealing with heartbreak or unrequited love, in no way does it mean others can’t appreciate her music.

ACT:SAMANTHA: Her songs also speak to people. I feel like a lot of the stuff she’s put out is so relevant to my current situation or like anybody’s current situations. It really helps girls feel seen. Not even just girls, I feel like men can enjoy it to if you want. Anyone can really enjoy that’s the beauty of her music.

TRACK: But Swift has done more than inspire her fans through music. She’s taught them to stand up for themselves through her recent actions in the industry

ACT:SAMANTHA: She actually released two re-recorded versions of her old albums last year. She released red(Taylors version) in November and fearless(Taylors version) in April because of a situation involving her former record label with Scott Borchetta. Where they sold all her masters to Scooter Brawn.Someone she specifically asked them not to because of the way he’s treated her in the past

TRACK: For Swift, re-recording her albums is a way of taking back her power, one of her main goals as an artist was to own her masters and Scooter Brawn attempted to take that away from her. Despite the albums having been released years prior, the re-releases have been a huge success and garnered massive amounts of support from fans. A testament to her reputation as one of the most influential artists of our time.

For all your pop-culture news, I’m Charlene Figueroa.

HOST INTRO:

With the pandemic forcing people to stay in their homes, we saw a great uptick in various collecting hobbies. Specifically related to trading cards. Leonard Melnik spoke to a fellow student at Baruch college to find out more about these hobbies.

Ambi: Sound of chatter of classroom and other students talking

Track: I am here with Jose Tirado in the Multimedia Journalism class. He mentions that he only recently started using computers, so I asked him what other hobbies he has.

ACT: Jose : Collecting Baseball cards is a hobby I have. I described it to a teacher one time as pokemon and Yu-Gi-Yo cards. I like the special inserts which aren’t worth a lot of money, I don’t go into cards for the money I go in for the rush of the pull.

Track: To “pull” is to open a card pack and see what you find. Much like buying a lottery ticket, the excitement and anticipation is worth the price to many consumers. Jose started collecting baseball cards from a very young age.

ACT: Jose: I started in 2009 when I was 8 years old. My dad bought a box from walmart. I don’t have those cards anymore, they are destroyed somewhere. I was not good at keeping them clean and stuff when I was younger

Track: Jose does not share interests with other friends/students, and since he just started using computers he has not been able to connect with communities that share the interest.

ACT: Jose: I literally don’t know a single person who likes baseball (cards).

Track: Jose’s favorite baseball card is a Mike Trout rookie card

ACT: Jose: He’s a really popular baseball player, and its a super expensive. Its like in the millions. There are a lot of copies like art, the baseball card is like a card but its actually a portrait.

Track: But baseball cards are not the only cards he collects

Act: Jose: In my past I usually connect Pokemon and Yu-gi-yo cards. My Yu-gi-yo adventuress started when a friend gave me a deck. I don’t play with Pokemon cards, I just collect them.

Track: Collecting cards continue to be a great hobby for many people, and their worth continues to grow. Whether they have intrinsic value or they are just worth a lot, that’s up to the beholder. For Baruch College, I am Leonard Melnik.

HOST INTRO: New York City is a unique place that is called home by many from all backgrounds. Baruch College, CUNY is a place that welcomes everyone from students in state and beyond, allowing for an experience that is atypical to the one we may think of when “college experience” comes to mind. Host Andriana Kourkoumelis speaks to fellow Junior and Economics major Jasper Alday who explains his favorite things to do as a newcomer to NYC from Texas.

AMBI: Students speaking in room 7-160 in the Newman Vertical Campus at Baruch College.

TRACK: I am here with student Jasper to learn about his experience as someone who grew up in the suburbs of Texas living his life as a college student in New York City. He is a junior that is pursuing an Economics degree, and is involved in organizations like USG on campus. He has lived in both Manhattan and Brooklyn, and explains his favorite pastime on his day to day.

AMBI: Outdoor noises in Flatiron of cars, leaves rustling, and people speaking.

ACT: JASPER: A bit bizarre of a hobby that I have is just walking around the city aimlessly, I really like exploring different neighborhoods, each neighborhood in NY has a very distinct character, and like different types of people as well.

TRACK: Jasper learns a lot from his walks about various neighborhoods that he may not have been introduced to otherwise, and expresses the therapeutic aspect to the simple act of observation. He describes Texas as suburbia, being completely different from what we consider customary while living in New York City. Further, he touches on the accessibility of public transportation.

AMBI: The sound of a train approaching at 14th Street.

ACT: JASPER: Texas has a very awful public transportation system, also I was in the suburbs. No one really took advantage of public transportation it was pretty much nonexistent. I pretty much would have had to drive everywhere if I was still living in Texas. I definitely prefer walking in the city as opposed to driving.

TRACK: Jasper will continue to further explore the city as he resides and studies here, and hopes to learn from this hobby in his daily life.

HOST INTRO: Being that Baruch College is known as a commuter school, having a social life is tough. Many do not get the typical college experience one would if they were on a college campus. Baruch College is located in New York City which makes it challenging to have a typical college experience. For Baruch College students to have a social life, they must make the effort to get involved in clubs, join extracurriculars or go out of their way to make friends in their classes. Elissa Leung, junior at Baruch College majoring in math, talks about how she adjusted well at Baruch College after being virtual for two years.

AMBI: Sound of Baruch College campus in New York City on a typical day of classes.

TRACK: I am here with Elissa Leung in the athletic area in level B2 of the Newman Vertical Campus at Baruch College next to the entrance of the gymnasium and the overhead of the swimming pool. She is a junior undergraduate student-athlete at CUNY Baruch College. Leung says she has been able to improve her social life by being on the women’s basketball team and the Baruch Scholar Honors program. She said her junior year is going well as it is a work in progress. She talks about a STARR Career Development program that she believes is going to help prepare her for her future career.

ACT: ELISSA: I am personally interested in working in data science in the future. I really want to in the future work in technology and be able to pursue a math degree and that is where data science comes in. This Technology, Leadership, Development program meets twice a week during club hours. It is honestly the commitment of another class so basically taking five classes because we have assignments due and we have to work on team projects with our team members and things like that.

TRACK: On top of her academics she is focused on her future career but also makes her social life a priority. Leung talks about how she developed a strong social life after being online for two years during the pandemic.

ACT: ELISSA: I was fortunate because I am part of the Baruch Scholars Honor program and I actually have friends in Macaulay Honors. I know at Baruch it is hard to find friends and make a social life. Outside of school I am on the Baruch women’s basketball team which also helped me with my social life. I also gained new friends with my teammates and other student-athletes.

TRACK: Something that has helped Leung have a social life is being in athletics and her programs that she is involved in. It gave her a sense of community with being on her team and having her program from the start helped her be around like-minded individuals that help her excel into the best version of herself.

ACT: ELISSA: I think it is big to know what you are passionate about and there are clubs at Baruch for everything like video games, business, things like that. You don’t have to limit yourself just to go to business heavy clubs there are also social clubs. So just putting yourself out there, as hard as it is, it is the best thing to do if you want to have a social life at Baruch.

TRACK: Junior, Elissa Leung will continue to make the best out of her college experience as she is working towards her future career goals. For Baruch College, I am Julia Cuttone.
