I’m thinking of focusing on the experience of undocumented trans women who have come to the United States for safety, and how they have been impacted by the current anti-immigrant political climate. I want to ask questions about why they left their home country, how their experience in the United States has been so far, and the fears/challenges that they have faced because of their undocumented status.

Radio Story Proposal
I will conduct a radio story on the Conversation Partners Program at Baruch College. The program pairs native and non-native speakers together. The program looks to help nonnative speakers gain confidence in their English speaking abilities and receive support academically and professionally. Native speakers have the opportunity to develop their communications when there are language barriers. I’ll be able to attend their events as a member of the program. The CPP at Baruch hosts multiple events in the semester, and they have cultural themes. The next event is on March 17th.
Radio Story Pitch
As immigrants, it’s very difficult to learn a new language and master new skills in a country that was so very different to the village the came from. I want to show how limited the professions Chinese immigrants can have in New York. Most Chinese immigrants either work in salons or restaurants. For my pitch, I would like to interview my aunts who are co-owners of a nail salon and the path they took to learn a new language, master a new skill, and become entrepreneurs.
Rising Concerns of COVID-19 on Baruch Campus
Local and national news stations report new cases daily of the Novel Coronavirus as it begins to spread across the globe with growing potentials to be the next epidemic virus. With reports of NYC’s first positive case and monitoring of 11 other local cases, Baruch students have begun to express fear and notions for the college’s administration to take action. Current Baruch Student Z.L* took the initiative to start a petition calling for the increased precautions and possible closure of the campus in efforts to protect the Baruch student community. The petition has received over 2500 signatures from Baruch students in 2 days and has now joined allies with City Technical College to raise awareness and call for action to be taken. I was able to get in contact with the originator of the petition and schedule an interview with them. I’d like to learn more about their call to action in addition to collective statements from Baruch students and faculty members; gaining a full perspective of Baruch campus reactions to COVID-19.
Z.L* is an abbreviated name of the originator of the petition. The official name of the student will remain redacted until I receive consent to publish in my article.
Radio Story Pitches
1. The SEEK program was established in 4-year CUNY institutions for low-income students to have an opportunity to receive a college education. Like HEOP and EOP, SEEK has given a great opportunity for students, especially minorities, to thrive in college with the help of the summer program, peer mentorship, tutoring, counseling, and other resources that cater to the needs of students. My story would cover Baruch’s SEEK community and how students feel about it. I have access to the story because I can go to the SEEK office and I know SEEK students. This story is interesting because it puts the word out there about the program and SEEK is a large part of why Baruch is so diverse. This story is focused on educating students and getting their opinions on SEEK. My soundbites would be typing from computers, talking, footsteps, the phone ringing, etc.
2. I can try to do a piece on The Fresh Air Fund, a nonprofit organization that serves the children of families and offers opportunities for underserved children to go camping. They have 2 programs, Friendly Town Program, and the sleep away camps. The Fresh Air Fund prides itself on its ability to encourage growth and learning in our youth. Camp Anita Bliss Coler is one of the camps that helps girls between the ages of 8-16 embrace sisterhood and succeed in unfamiliar activities. I would discuss the activities Camp ABC offers and how it reflects supports The Fresh Air Fund’s mission. Camp is a great alternative to spending summer at home and keeps kids entertained while providing them with housing and other accommodations. Also, because of the experiences children often return for future summers and off-season weekends. Eventually many choose to work at the camps. These summers leave a lasting impact. I could interview people that work at the office, former campers, and current and former counselors, including the program staff.
Radio Pitch Sikh Community
So, I might choose the same topic “Sikh Community” for my radio pitch. Didn’t really decided what to cover about Sikh Community.
- Undocumented Sikh Community
- Sikh confronts racism head-on in NYC
Radio Story Pitch
So I love women’s sports, especially women’s basketball. I have my own opinions and thoughts on what I feel like they will need to improve and build on, in order to strengthen their platform and expand. I am curious to know what other people think. There is a lot of bias when it comes to women in sports, so it will be interesting to speak with others and get a take on their opinions on where they view the platform of women’s basketball being in a few years. How much do you know/ follow women’s basketball? Does it have the opportunity to become mainstream like men’s basketball? (questions along those lines)
