I was thinking of documenting a local corner store and how they deal with the pandemic. I hope that the store owner will let me take pictures of the store and the people working there. If that does not work, then I can try to document how my family is dealing with the pandemic in their own way. Another idea I had was to document the conditions of the Stapleton projects in Staten Island.  I have been coming regularly there since my girlfriend lives here and I have been noticing the neglect of the neoighborhood.

  1. I would like to capture the inequality of sanitation from different locations in NYC to raise awareness to the community that we are treated differently based on our location.
  2. Throughout this pandemic, I have listened to many say “COVID stopped me from traveling and seeing new places,” which is unfortunate to hear especially from people that live in New York City. In the other hand, as a New Yorker who would love to travel one day as well, I realized that there are so many places I have not been to through out the city. Therefore I would like to demonstrate hidden gems of New York.
  3. Another pitch I had in mind was to document people from my community or around the city  (from a distance) to see the major changes that we had to adapt to because of this pandemic.

I thought about taking pictures of deer here in NJ, specifically in my backyard. I just moved from NY to Jersey and considering the fact that I’ve lived in New York City my whole life, it’s very different here. I miss the city too much and it’s almost impossible to adapt here once you’ve lived in NY. First of which, the deer have come to be a significant example of change. They casually walk around as if they own the place and I find it very interesting.

While taking such pictures, I was thinking of writing about what residents think of such animals roaming around their houses. Some neighbors are frustrated in the sense that they can’t plant a garden without their plants being eaten by the deer.

  1. I’m currently living with my dad in Texas right now and I’m helping him move to Florida after being laid off from his job because of Covid. I could show the process of him moving and offer a closer perspective of people affected by Covid and how they have to adapt.
  2. Since I’m in another state, I could capture how other people are handling the pandemic and give a first hand view of Covid’s effects in two states.
  3. This  might be a stretch but I was thinking I could show how nature and the environment has changed because of this pandemic and compare to see whether it’s been for the better.

  1. I have friends who are still dorming but commute home once a week, I can try to capture the two different living environments  of their dorms vs. being at home.
  2. I have another friend who is working part-time at a vaccine distribution facility at his campus. I can take pictures of him as he works in the area.
  3. Capturing scenic photos of friends and family of how they’re dealing with stress during this pandemic.

I have chosen to report and photograph the facts the pandemic had on the Staten Island Mall employees, store and business hours, and guidelines. I’ve worked at the mall for years so I know how the experience was before and after and how much of a change they all have experienced. I feel like I can capture the change and affect and out on certain aspects of the shopping experience. For example, the glass that separates the cashiers from the customers. The tables by the entrance display hand sanitizer and masks for people to respect the guidelines and be considerate of other people’s safety. The mall capacity and the amount of security that has increased. I have more examples but these are just the ideas that I’m considering.

Throughout all my brainstorming I think I came up with a good idea. Im thinking of making my photo essay on my local Catholic Church. St.Athanasius Roman Catholic Church is located in the South Bronx. It is the home to many faithful parishioners, but because of quarantine and the virus the church has undergone many rule changes, as well as many closings. In my vision I think I could take pictures of the congregation, the priests, other that work and devote their lives to the church. Also, I know the priest and many of the people that attend so I can get many interviews in. There are also a few events coming up, like “Ash Wednesday,” talk about last years compared to this years now that there are rules imposed for covid. The church is very beautiful and I think many of the pictures will come out perfect.

P.S. I have a DSLR camera, but I want to get more practice.

I was considering reporting on the gentrification of The Bronx, with a focus on the South Bronx and the new apartment buildings and stores taking over.

I was also considering a more character-focused story about the African women in my community and how they continue with their traditions miles away from home.

  2. Capturing photos of my sister’s new baking business that she started during the pandemic. What started as a hobby has now turned into a business that has allowed her to make money and also give people a helping hand.
