Linguistic Landscape Analysis

The area I have chosen for the study of my Linguistic Landscape analysis is Auburndale, Flushing. Auburndale is a small yet broad neighborhood residing in the Northeastern area of Queens. It is a very family-oriented community, with most of the housing being apartments and a few single-family homes. While living in Auburndale for a few months, I have noticed that there is not too much to offer unless you walk a bit further out of the central neighborhood. However, I believe that the small stores, signs, and graffiti reveal how language and writing reflect different cultures and dynamics within the community of Auburndale. Some of my findings include diversity in languages, showing the communities identity and demographics. The various business signs which indicate whether the stores are large or small and locally run. And lastly, what kind of culture between residents there is, which can be observed with wall art, marketing posters, etc. All of these findings have given me an idea of what Auburndale is like, regarding demographics, dynamics, and overall culture.
