The New York Police department keeps a record of incoming and outgoing phone calls and text messages on all confiscated stolen devices. This, in theory, is good practice and a smart way to help connect criminals together and potentially make further arrests. However, the database contains all of the records on the stolen phone, including those with no criminality involved. This causes issues of privacy for those in contact with both the thief and with those in contact with the previous owner. Privacy is increasingly becoming more and more of a commodity in New York City, which is making many people very upset.
