Principles of New Media
“The internet can be thought of as one huge distributed media database, also crystallized the basic condition of the new information society : overabundance of information of all kinds. One response was the popular idea of software “agents” designed to automate searching for relevant information.”
I never realized how important the automation of information was in my everyday life, especially when it comes to information access. Over the years, the amount of information on the internet has expanded exponentially. Without a systematic way of accessing this information, it would be lost in cyberspace and useless to internet users. What used to take hours of research to acquire is now at our fingertips because of automation. All kinds of media including images, audio and video files are capable of being retrieved at a moments notice. It has been debated that since we have all of this information at our disposal, we have less of a need to have knowledge on a variety of topics on hand.
The evolution of automation is very interesting especially when it comes to computer generated images. “Simple algorithms” are responsible for the creation of computer generated content. The fact that a computer can create images that are used in many forms of media is impressive and confusing. It has blurred the line between what is real and what is computer generated. The creation of video games has always interested me because of their complexity. The coding behind their creation can be simplified and the generation of images can be expedited because of automation.
