New Baruch Geoportal Just Launched
We’ve relaunched the Baruch Geoportal, our library’s on-line repository for GIS and geospatial data. Our new front-end uses a Confluence wiki which allows us to: update the site more quickly, spend more time on content and less time on design, and to collaborate more easily. Also, it’s visually integrated with the library’s and the college’s website. Much of the existing content was migrated over, and we’ve added some new material. You can read our inaugural blog post for more details, and thenĀ follow along with that blog to monitor updates on the site. The new url is:
https://www.baruch.cuny.edu/confluence/display/geoportal/
The library’s databases list has been updated to reflect this change. If people still have bookmarks to the old address (http://www.baruch.cuny.edu/geoportal/), they’ll automatically be re-directed to the new site (at least for the next few months).
Ulrichsweb Is Available Again
Access has been restored. Serials lovers rejoice!
PalgraveConnect e-book titles
We have temporarily lost access to the (centrally purchased) PalgraveConnect e-book titles we have access to (2010 to 2014). The vendor is aware and thinks access will be restored by tomorrow at the latest.
Cambridge Companions Online Available Again
Access was just restored.
Ghost Content in OneSearch Has Been Exorcised
The problem reported here a month ago–ebook content that we don’t have access to showing up mysteriously in search results–has been fixed. All such ghost content has been banished whence it came.
Workaround for Problems with Flash on Desktop Computers in the Library
Today at the desk a student was unable to use a companion website for his finance class because the browser was giving him an error message saying that the version of Adobe Flash needed to be updated. When I suggested he try switching from Firefox to Internet Explorer, we found that the version of Flash in Internet Explorer was fine and he was able to get to the website.
It’s my understanding that the system image that is used to define the stander settings and software versions that are on lab computers is being updated this summer closer to the start of the fall semester. In the meanwhile, this browser switcheroo trick might be a useful workaround to keep in mind. BCTC staff should be consulted whenever these sorts of problems arise, but as was the case today, sometimes you’re on your own for a little while between BCTC shifts.
SRDS Database Is Available Again
We have regained access to SRDS recently. The links from the databases pages should be working again.
WestlawNext Is Now Available from Off Campus
Thanks to new EZproxy settings from OCLC, we can finally connect to WestlawNext from off campus.
It is important to note that we don’t subscribe to all content that you can find in this database. There doesn’t seem to be a way to limit your search just the content we have access to. To see a list of content we do have access to, click the “Tools” tab in the Browse menu and then click “My Content” on the page that appears.
