Connecting to Safari Ebooks from OneSearch

The route to a Safari ebook from a OneSearch record for that book is a bit more circuitous than it is for ebooks on other platforms (such as Ebook Central or Books24x7). Here is what users will need to do:

  1. In the OneSearch record, click the green “Full text available” link.
  2. Instead of being taken to a Baruch login page (the one with the night time photo of the Vertical Campus building in the background), you get a web page on the O’Reilly website about the book and a popup window that says “Welcome! Get instant access through your library.” In that popup window, click “Select your institution” from the drop down menu and then at the top of the list of options, select “Not listed? Click here”
  3. A new box will open in the popup window asking for your “academic email.” Baruch and CUNY SPS folks should type in their school email address and then click “Let’s Go.”
  4. The Baruch College login page shows up (the one with the Vertical Campus building in the background). Baruch and CUNY SPS folks should enter the same username and password info they’d use to access any other library resource and click the “Login” button.
  5. The next thing the user will see is the ebook itself on the Safari platform and they can begin reading it.

Using a OneSearch record for a Safari ebook called slide:ology, I recorded a video demo of the steps above:

More Database Trials and Expanded Database Access

In the past week, we’ve added a dozen or more additional resources to our growing list of databases that we have trial access to or that the vendor has temporarily expanded our existing access. The “Trials” tab on the A-Z databases page has temporarily been renamed “Trials & COVID-19” to indicate the mix of resources found there. On that page, you’ll see one box for all the trials and expanded access we now have courtesy of vendors who wanted to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic. There is a separate box on that page for the few databases that we were already considering as subscription possibilities.

Please look over the list of newly added resources and let me know by email or a comment on this post which subject database pages some of those resources should be added to.

List of All Database Trials or Temporary Expansion of Content Access

We’ve taken advantage of many offers this past week for free database trials or expanded content access in our already subscribed databases. A complete and still growing list of these can be found on the Trials tab of the A-Z databases page. If the trial or expanded access is long enough (at least 3 months), then we’re also adding some of those trial links to subject database pages as well. Feel free to add any of these trial database to your research guides, too.

Free Access to APA Publication Manual Through May 25

The APA has made the 7th edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association freely available on the only two ebook platforms that exist for it: VitalSource and RedShelf. Both of these platforms are designed not for institutional subscriptions but instead for individuals to use to gain personal subscription access to textbooks. The steps to access are somewhat lengthy (you have to set up your own personal account first). Here is how to get started on either platform.

  2. Scroll down to the “Helpful Links” section and click “Bookshelf Login”
  3. On the login page (“Welcome to VitalSource Helps”,) click the link for “Create a VitalSource account”
  4. Complete the account creation page. Use your school email address and pick a unique password.
  5. Once you create an account, you’ll receive an email at your school account that you’ll need to open and click the confirmation link.
  6. Once you’re logged in on the VitalSource page, use the search box at the top right corner to search for “publication manual of the american psychological society”
  7. On the results page, mouse over the book jacket for the 7th edition (it’s orange and blue) and click the “Borrow” button that appears.
  8. On the right, a small window will open with details about the book you’ve selected and a blue “Borrow” button that you need to click.
  9. Once you’ve borrowed the book, you have online access to it through May 25, 2020.

  8. After clicking the confirmation link, a new browser window will open that says “Redeem your RedShelf Access Code.” Ignore that code request (there is none that you need to enter) and instead click the blue “Find a Book” button.
  9. On the “RedShelf Responds” page that opens, scroll down to the search box below where it says “Borrow your eBooks now” and type into the search box, “publication manual of the american psychological association”
