This is a good question and I am confident that the answer is yes! As the articles have pointed out, the shutdown has had very far reaching effects across America and beyond. A large amount of people have gone on strike and because of this, other people are affected for various reasons. Less customers means that the company will make less money, which means that their is less for their employees, which in turn affects their families. We can continue to monitor these effects, but you get the gist of what I am saying. The shutdown likely affects many Baruch student and staff members and possibly more seriously than I currently realize. We realize that the Government Shutdown is more complicated than it appears and resolving it won’t be easy, but we must find a way because nobody is better off with it around. Imagine if the Shutdown had occurred earlier and wrecked the Convocation ceremonies at Baruch? Setting up such a wide spread event takes a lot of preparation and people to manage, so if a lot of people were on strike, it may have been cancelled or may have had a lower turnout. They may have had to drop the book that was given to us as a required reading if the celebration was cancelled, which wouldn’t be very bad, but it’s the thought that counts in the end. Even if the book was not very enjoyable, it was something that all of us could read and share our thoughts on. Convocation was a fun way to start off the College experience for me and I’m glad that it occurred! I wouldn’t want anyone to have to miss such a grand event to celebrate the start of their new period of life.

Update: The Shutdown has now ended. This is good news for just about everyone and I’d say that it’s positive for Baruch as well. We don’t specifically know how deeply Baruch was affected by the Shutdown, but it likely had an effect on us. Now that the shutdown is over, we can focus on our exams and assignments without worry. This was definitely a very unique way for the new generation of freshmen to start their college experiences.
