One in 8 Million
Hello and welcome to our New York Stories seminar. One of your first assignments is to spend time looking at a New York Times multimedia feature called “One in 8 Million.” The feature uses photos and audio interviews to profile regular New Yorkers. It illustrates an important theme of this course — that New York gets its vibrance, energy and identity from the people who live here. When you go to the site, pick and choose about a dozen people who are profiled and listen to their stories. We hope this will help inspire you to begin the search for your own New York stories that you will research and tell over the course of the semester.

I can spend hours listening to each of these stories. In the moment when I watch these videos, I feel as if I know these people because we can find so much of these characters in ourselves. The photos make the stories real because they show things and places that I am very familiar with: the subway, streets in chinatown, the pier or a local barber. At the same time, I feel as distance because I pass by hundreds of thousands of these faces everyday but have never know them.
