Multimedia
Multimedia Projects (DUE MONDAY, APRIL 4):
1. Identify the subject of your multimedia “One in 8 Million” project. This is the most important step. You need to find a New Yorker who has an interesting story to tell, and who will be willing to be interviewed and photographed. Start thinking about this right way. Who do you know who lives in the city who has a compelling story? Who is someone you see in your daily commute or work/ school routine who you would like to know more about? Think about people who might be living the themes and narratives we’ve discussed in this class. If the person is boring, or hesitant to cooperate, the quality of the feature will suffer.
2. Set up an interview and arrange to spend additional time with the subject. You will probably want to get 8-12 good photos of your subject that are varied. This means you will probably have
to have more than one meeting. See if you can tag along for part of the person’s day and take photographs. The audio interview should be more formal. Set a time and place and try to make
sure you meet in a quiet place without a lot of background noise. For equipment, you should use whatever you have available — digital still camera or camera phone for photos — digital audio
recorder for audio. If you don’t have any of these items, I will be able to lend you equipment through the Journalism Department.
3. Produce your feature. I will provide links and handouts on using these programs to those of you who need them. You will do this production work on your own, although I would be open to setting up some lab time outside of class if enough of you can agree on a date and time when the journalism lab would be available to us.
*If you have access to a Mac computer, you will edit down the audio interview to about 2-3 minutes using Garageband. Make sure the audio track flows logically. You will have to make
editorial decisions about what the focus of the piece will be. Then you can create an audio slideshow using iMovie, dragging in the photos and audio file. You will export the movie out of
iMovie, upload the file to YouTube and cut and paste the link code for posting on our class blog.
*If you are working on a PC, you can create the multimedia feature using a combination of Picassa 3 (for photos) and Audacity (for audio), both of which are free downloads from the
Web. You will edit down the audio interview to about 2-3 minutes using Audacity. Make sure the audio track flows logically. You will have to make editorial decisions about what the focus of the site will be. Then you can create an audio slideshow by creating a movie in Picassa 3, using the
photos and uploading the final edited piece of audio. You will export the movie out of Picassa (or post it directly to YouTube if you get that prompt), upload the file to YouTube and cut and
paste the link code for posting on our class blog.
4. Post the feature to the class blog. Write a nice headline and a two- to three-sentence introduction, followed by the embedded YouTube feature. Tag it “One in 8 Million.”
