NMA 2050 Final Project: 25 Second Animation
Animation Project
Due by the end of class on May 14th, the last day of class.
Due by the end of the day on May 19th. Make sure to take advantage of open studio hours!
At least 25 seconds
- Has an edited audio track that is not just a song. It must have multiple audio tracks like the audio project or sound effects. Have fun with this.
- This is an Art. So don’t just make something that could already exist or make fanfiction. Don’t put Superman in Gotham City, don’t put Homer in Springfield… make something new. Remember “Culture Always Builds On The Past.” So you can remix and mash things up if you want, but be original.
- This does not have to be frame by frame in Photoshop, it can be stop motion images, drawings, something you made on your tablet, or images from Illustrator…. just make it at least 25 seconds.
- This is going to take some work, you can do it! It will be worth it.

Lets watch and talk about Animation
A thaumatrope is a toy that was popular in the 19th century. A disk with a picture on each side is attached to two pieces of string. When the strings are twirled quickly between the fingers the two pictures appear to blend into one due to the persistence of vision

The phenakistoscope was an early animation device that used a spinning disk of sequential images and the persistence of vision principle to create an illusion of motion.
A zoetrope is one of several pre-cinema animation devices that produce the illusion of motion by displaying a sequence of drawings or photographs showing progressive phases of that motion.

A flip book is a book with a series of pictures that vary gradually from one page to the next so that when the pages are turned rapidly, the pictures appear to animate by simulating motion or some other change.
Fantasmagorie is a 1908 French animated film by Émile Cohl. It is one of the earliest examples of traditional (hand-drawn) animation and considered by film historians to be the first animated cartoon.
Steamboat Willie, 1928
The first cartoon with sound effects
Fantasia, 1940
Astro Boy, 1952
Some of the first anime for television. Still to this day anime is mostly done by hand.
A hand-made, scratched-on film experiment in intermittent animation. The images are a group of twenty-four visuals, all non-representational, which arrange and rearrange on the screen in many combinations. The result is a changing pattern of sound and image that has its own rhythm for eye and ear.

Reading: McLuhan, The Medium is the Massage
Marshall McLuhan, The Medium is the Massage
Please do not summarize the content of the reading. I have read the reading and I already know what it says! Instead, pick a passage from the reading that stands out to you, something that is compelling or confusing, something that causes you inspiration or outrage. Perform a close reading of that passage and explain what it means to you and why it holds your interest.
Post a 300-word response on your blog.
