33 Rules to be an Artist

I’ve heard some of these before, but I think it’s hard to do. I have taken some art classes in middle and high school, but I usually only create realistic things. I don’t usually let myself explore enough. The line in lesson 13: scavenge – life is your syllabus: gather from everywhere is a phrase I like and need to work on. I feel like my pieces before didn’t show much about me, except one. I want to show more pieces that are about me and show something about my life, even if others cannot recognize it right away.

Throughout the whole passage, it talks about the career of being an artist. First is that in lesson 2, it tells us to tell your story, but it also says that just because it’s your story, that doesn’t mean you’re entitled to an audience. Towards the end, at lesson 20, it talks about likely being poor. This is a thought I have always thought about artists because some artists’ work never get recognized until they pass away, which means during their lifetime they were not being rich off their artwork. Then there is lesson 21, which made me ponder on what is real success. For an artist that might mean working for a living to be able to do art. For me though, I think it would be having a more stable job to have free time with my family in the future. This is quite different from what it describes as an artist’s life here. What I find even harder is that you still need some people to recognize your work to make it as your career, which is even harder. Those twelve so-called stupid people might not ever come in your lifetime. Even though twelve seems like a small amount of people, but they range across different professions. Being able to get in contact with them and allowing them to accept your work is something that might be hard.
