Reading: Russolo, The Art of Noises

When reading this passage I agree with many parts of it, but there are still some parts that I do not completely agree with. I do think that the noises in what people agree as “musical sounds” are too limited. There are so many noises that are all sounds as well, but still not counted as musical. In everyday nature, every minute there are different sounds we can use. The page-long sample of describing the sounds in a battle can be done everyday by anyone because there are sounds around them all the time. The passage said that in nature there are no sounds besides natural disasters, but that is not true. Even the wind has sound, maybe too soft for us to hear or at a pitch too low. I agree that these new sounds can be used in a new sound orchestra, but I don’t think you can categorize all these sounds in 6 categories. There are infinite sounds and it is hard to just keep them in 6 limited categories. I think in the future more musicians should try to find different sounds and add them to their music. This will add to the ten, twenty, thirty thousands different sounds.

I listened ? Concrete Poetry by Henri Chopin. It was very fascinating that these were actually people reading poetry because the way the author mixed the sounds, I could barely hear any words. It was like in a horror movie with all the random low-pitch sounds. The voices sounded like they were in the background and added to the suspense. Then in the middle, there was a pretty uncomfortable high-pitched sound. It probably represented yelling from the scariness. Personally, I would not listen to this again because it did scare me a little. I never did think that sounds could be considered music in this way. Yet, just like what the passage wrote – what people consider as music have been built into us by the music of past and current generations in the mainstream. That is probably why it is hard for me to accept this sound as music as well.
