The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction Reading

First off, I do want to agree with Benjamin when he talks about mordern technologies like the camera are transforming how we perceive the world and art. I think about it in this way — through the camera lense we see a more realistic view of the world and other lives that perhaps traditional art forms is not able to capture. I also agree with Benjamin that now with cameras and film, it is not much for a sole purpose anymore. It has become a form of art that the author wants more and more people to see, to use and spread.

I personally like film a lot and I never really thought about the comparison to theaters, but what Benjamin says is very true. In theaters, I can feel that the actor is a tool to really protray the story. In film though the actor is very crucial to what type of story this is. Their body language, speaking tone, and facial expression is caught more drastically by the camera to influence how the viewers see this story. The other difference is also the fact that in theaters there is one try and only once because whatever you act it is the final result that the audience sees. On the other hand, film is often switching between cameras and zoom in or out, so a big part of being a good film is the camera man, the director, and the angles of the camera. I must admit this camera is really changing many things because if I were born in the 1800s, I would only see my life and this could be the only long perspective I have of a human’s life. Through film, we are able to see different lives that are being lived out which is why I love film.
