Reading Reapond 3- The medium is the message by McLuhan

Before McLuhan, people often thought that the medium is the medium, the information is the information, the medium is only the carrier of the information, and it cannot represent the information itself. But McLuhan’s definition of medium gives us a new concept of medium.

McLuhan lets us understand the medium is the information. In other words, in the process of information dissemination, the influence of the media on the content of information is not negligible. When we accept information, the influence of the medium is not so obvious, and its role is subtle. The medium defines the pattern in which we perceive information and also determines the mode in which we make feedback.

On the other hand, the new medium represents a new way of interaction, which changes the new interactive rules of our new living space, people and people and their own needs, and the changes that the Internet brings to our lives. We need to reconsider the media pair – you, your family, your neighbors. Changes in your education, your work, your government, and the relationship with “others”

One of the things that impressed me the most was the change in space for our family. “The family circle has widened.” In the interpersonal relationship, there is no longer a need to keeping maintain a close relationship all the time, which makes people feel pressure or even hard. I will compare this to the breathing during swimming. For example, can parents “view” their child’s mobile phone to ensure their mental health? Or I find that more often parents choose to let their children watch movies on the iPad when they are meeting with friends so that they can chat with friends. Looking back at the past without our mobile phone and computer, my family would prefer to meet and chat after dinner. Family members prefer to watch TV after dinner. The medium is information, which confirms that the rules of interaction between us are not changed by a video or a game, but by a mobile phone or a computer.

In addition, I also like McLuhan’s description of educational change, whether children are too fast to get into the content of crime and adult news from TV. The development of technology can make children learn faster. I think it is undeniable that the same story is more interesting from the cartoon of the mobile phone accompanied by interesting sounds and pictures are more interested than reading a book to understand the story. What do we care about? Do we only care about the content? I don’t think so, but the changes in the media that are different for us.
