Reading Response: The Medium is the Message

This article was a delight to read in my opinion for it was short concise and to the point. I was really surprised when the author stated that “students of media are persistently attacked as evaders, idly concentrating on means or processes rather on “substance.”” This took a minute for me to absorb, but once I did it made a little more sense. Today, students of media might be looked at as people who take shortcuts and really don’t add meaning to their work. However, its quite the opposite when you look into what goes into these new media creations.

McLuhan goes into breaking down his “You” idea into many small ones. The one that really caught my eye was probably “your education.” In this bit the author says that children weren’t really a thing until the seventeenth century. McLuhan says that maybe because prior to the seventeenth century, children had to work as soon as they were able – and had to also provide for the house they are living in. The quote, “today’s child is growing up absurd because he lives in two worlds, and neither pf them inclines him to grow up” resonates this feeling of living a double life in one. Children can be living a child’s life, and all of a sudden be dragged into the world of adults.

Overall, based on the article I feel McLuhan provided an abundance of points towards the interpretation of new media. Perhaps the author views new media as somewhat of a lazy and non evolutionary topic. In this article, it might have been portrayed that new media provides good and bad traits in the industry. The quote, “the new technology demands that we abandon the luxury of this posture, this fragmentary outlook” meaning to abandon the idea of separate individuals walking around with separate fixed points of view. This is one of the many exploits the author goes through in this article.
