Comments Off on The Medium is the Massage- Marshall McLuhan Reading Week 3
McLuhan’s main point for this article is the Medium, the electric circuit, which means the media and the change of the form of the media leads to the changing in human activities and lifestyle. I feel like this article can be broken down into two parts as the personal points of view and the world point of view for reading and understanding.
In the personal points of view, McLuhan breaks his YOU idea down into “You, Your Family, Your neighborhood, Your education, Your job, Your government, and the others. I really like one of his quote from “Your education”, “Today’s Child is growing up absurd because he lives in two worlds, and neither of them inclines him to grow up.” I think what he means is that the new media is mixing up the world into one. In other word, children may step into the adult accidentally and start getting influenced by a lot of good or bad elder people. Also, in my opinions, the “inclines” express the ideas that unlike the flat surface from the old days, the growth path is inclined right now where it represents for the innocent children either is hard to grow up onto the correct path or have fewer abilities to become mental maturity, which is not a good effect that media brings to children these days.
McLuhan’s Your neighborhood idea also stands out to me, where he mentions “It has reconstituted dialogue on a global scale.” and “You can’t go home again.” I totally agree with the author statement where the media really brings everyone together, but McLuhan takes it in a negative way. In my opinions, when he talks about “home’, he is talking about the personal space that everyone should have, which is getting more narrower. Moreover, “home” can be also understood as privacy for everyone. If we think about the current days, once an individual goes online, his or her personal information may be leak out by some professional hacker that result of exposes of all the personal information, which is something that McLuhan does not want to happen.
Overall, in my opinions, based on the article, I feel like McLuhan has a lot of different points of view towards the new media. When I am reading through the article, I see a lot of dislike towards the new media from McLuhan’s ideas such as when he compares the media with the book where the book is for people to avoid others and isolating themselves from the real world, but I have to agree with him because the connection brought by the media can have both good and bad effects towards individuals. It all depends on the person himself.
