IN CONTEXT:

The “Nuyor” aspect of the Nuyorican Theatre topic was useful while constructing and building an ideal map. What is more New York than the NYC Subway? Many times it is easy for individuals to recognize a place or location by correlating the address to the nearest Subway station. Additionally, subway routes are useful to define borderlines between different socioeconomic classes. For instance, as noted in the map, “the green” subway route trains 4, 5, 6 runs from one of the most exclusive areas of Manhattan the Lower East where the Nuyorican Poets Café can be found to 149-st and Grand Concourse where the Pregones Theatre was initially created exclusively for the low income residents of the Bronx.

My research was extensive. It was important for me to carefully identify locations which had substantial importance within the Nuyorican movement. Additionally, it was crucial to find train stations near the landmarks. Lastly, I was looking to diversify the locations within different socioeconomic neighborhoods. Resources such as Google Maps and even the MTA subway were key.

Locations:

1) Pregones Theatre: While searching for Theaters in New York City, Pregones Theatre was one of the only Puerto Rican Theaters in the Bronx. It is noteworthy to mention that I particularly chose this location because I will like to examine if there is any difference in art performance due to an audience or Theatre production of moderate income.

2) El Museo Del Barrio: I chose el Museo because it maintains and conserves the historical roots of the Nuyorican movement.

3) The Nuyorican Poets Café: The Nuyorican Poets Café was chosen particularly because it offers me the opportunity to see a collection of Puerto Rican artist in their comfort zone and social environment.

4) The Puerto Rican Travelers Theatre 1st Location: Interestingly enough, I chose the PRTT because it seemed to offer highbrow playwrights and actors. Broadway style!

5) The Puerto Rican Travelers Theatre 2nd location:  The second location offers me the opportunity to compare and contrast the productions and audience of the same Theatre house.
