Location Location Location!!!
Welcome to NYC Hostel Blog. This Blog recommends the best hostels in NYC catered to your preferences. I will highlight factors to consider in choosing your hostel.
In my opinion, hostel location is the most important factor for travelers. Most of our blog visitors are international students; they often don’t have the budget for expensive hotels. You might choose the cheapest hostel regardless of location. However, most hostels’ prices are about $45~$50, so just looking for price factor to choose the best hostel is really complicated.
One of my South Korea friends chose the cheapest hostel without considering its location. The hostel he chose was in Harlem. He planned to visit midtown and Upper East Side in Manhattan, which are far from Harlem. He ended up spending extra money on trains and taxis commuting to and from his hostel.
Many people would find a 20-minute commute acceptable. Also, subway fare is relatively affordable in New York. However, it was his first time in the city and he couldn’t speak English well. He blindly chose the cheapest hostel without considering its location and safety. According to Airbnb.com, there are 12,136 hostels in the city. The cheapest hostels are only $10 in Brooklyn, Long Island City, and Harlem (Exhibit 1). People usually just pick the cheapest hostels they can find. However, commute time is very important as well. Try to avoid long commutes from hostels to your destinations.
