New York Times Project

I went to a fraternity event at the beginning of the school year. I had a lot of fun because I like listening and dancing to electric dance music.

This article is about the popularity of dance music and how it is becoming a business. People are making organizations that cater to dance music festivals. People are trying to make money from its growing popularity.

Electronic dance music is genre of music that reaches out to a younger demographic. Up and coming DJ’s are becoming younger and younger these days which is inspiring for younger people.

The music festival in Brooklyn brought together many people to experience the different Djs playing at the different venues. People went went to the events with their friends and had a great night dancing.

I chose this article because I went to their last performance on Monday night at Barclays center although this article was about the Sunday night performance. This article described the atmosphere really well the night I went. My parents had bought me ticket so that I could go with my friends and what a memorable eighteenth birthday it turned out to be.

This article describes rave culture and what it is like. I chose this article because it is an accurate depiction of what my friends and I like to do sometimes.

Club fair

A fun and interesting event at Baruch is the club fair. You can check out the many different kind of clubs. Many are based on culture pride. Some examples are the Italian club, Japanese club, and Filipino club. This is a great event because it presents the diversity at Baruch. Joining one of these clubs can help you learn about new cultures and make friends that come from a different place than you. If you would like you could join a club of your own culture to find friends who are similar to you and have similar interests. The club fair is an important event because it helps students expand their views on culture and see diversity as a good thing. When I visited the club fair I thought it was extremely amusing. I saw students of all different ethnicities looking at different types of clubs. It showed me how open minded the students of Baruch are when it comes to diversity. I highly recommend all students to visit the next club fair.

Fashion’s Blind Spot

Fashion's Blind Spot

This article is about the diversity of white and black models on designer runways. Five years ago, the fashion industry had complaints that many shows and magazines included nothing but white models. Former model, Bethann Hardison said that part of the problem is that “no one in power slaps these designers around.” She goes on to add “If you are going to be bold enough to do it, then please be bold enough to explain it.” Beginning at Fashion Week in September, Ms. Hardison is organizing a social media campaign to bring public inspection to specific designers who do not use black models. She wants to raise awareness to consumers about designers who do not accept minorities on runways.

College Diversity

In the New York Times article “In California, Push for College Diversity Starts Earlier” the author speaks about how Californian colleges have found alternatives to Affirmative Action, a law that was shut down in the state in ’96. The article speaks about how, many of the state’s colleges spend millions on outreach programs that help minority and underrepresented high school students stay competitive when applying for college. These outreach programs valuable information about applying to college as well as prep for SATs and ACTs.

I personally agree with this method of increasing diversity and helping students who live in poor neighborhoods with low performance high schools, rather than affirmative action and its basis on race. Like the article said this could l help middle class minority students who don’t need the extra help and you can you can also infer that it is an injustice to white students living in poor neighborhoods. California’s race less approach with grants to the outreach programs of colleges is the way to go.

Diversity in Sororities

Skjermbilde 2013-10-21 kl. 10.13.09
At the University of Alabama sororities are being told to add diversity to their recruiting efforts.  The sororities are overwhelmingly white and the college would like to change that. The sororities have admitted in the past that they have denied members based on race.  The president of the school, Judy L. Bonner told the sororities to add diversity “to remove barriers in order to increase diversity in our sororities.”
