  • 4  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RJqf0_Nt1hM (Ricki)
  • 5 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8BObOQHvvFQThis video illustrates and graphs the process in creating a research question.  The researcher should brainstorm – choose a topic that is interesting.  The researcher needs to dissect or breakdown the topic into subareas.  The next step is to raise questions.  There are the 4 P’s in research:  People, Problem, Program, Phenomenon.  This will lead to formulating a question to assist in finalizing the research topic. (Renata)
  • 6 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=enA29lrcMT0This video explains the challenges and ways in finding the best research topic. The presenter states that there will be challenges in the distinction between existing and new knowledge.  The researcher needs to focus on the gaps in the knowledge on the topic.  Finding gaps is hard because it will require a lot of reading.  Time is limited when finding the topic.  Disagreement in the knowledge gaps lends itself to allowing the researcher to choose a topic. (Renata)

Methodological tools for Qualitative research

  • 5 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1OaNiTlpyX8  Basics in mixed method research.  Creswell used examples such as Al Gore’s documentary and sports to explain qualitative and quantitative research and how it can give more insight to the research.  Collecting and analyzing information in both the qualitative and quantitative frame can lead to a broader framework.  (Renata)
  • 7 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nb70vhcCf8w
This video describes theorists different views of interviewing in the past, present, and future.  The past way of interviewing assumes the objective knowledge is prevalent.  The present is seen as a negotiated accomplishment in order to create a “we” relationship.  The future way of interviewing uses an empathetic approach which is considered “razor” edge. (Renata)
  • 8 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jSdxYb2IVwgThis video lists the qualities of a qualitative researcher.  The use of clips from television shows and movie clips makes this video easy to follow.  The video suggests the following qualities:  Observe, Make the ordinary seem strange, Use thick description, and Interview – ask open ended questions. (Renata)
  • 9 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sqb4jk3NMo4 The video explains the factors to consider when conducting qualitative research. It gives the pros and cons of conducting specific methods in qualitative research. (Renata)

Methodological tools for Quantitative research

  • 1  http://youtu.be/lduW62kLJB8  (Andy)  An overview of the leading quantitative methods used in the field of public relations, including surveys and content analysis among others.
  • 2 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MlU22hTyIs4
This is an animation comparing qualitative and quantitative research methods.  The animation is used with Albert Einstein and Queen Elizabeth as a debate about qualitative and quantitative research.  The animation is a creative way in making the concepts interesting.  (Renata)
  • 3 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LZQuEq2IaDE here is a video on quantitative research methods in the social sciences. The video goes over some of the basics in research, such as questions regarding the relationship between cause & effect, and information on how to choose to conduct research using quantitative or qualitative methods.
  • 4 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UywO2XuFuBA this video explains how in order to conduct research successfully, researchers must decide beforehand what type of research method to use (either quantitative or qualitative), and must use the method to give structure and vision to the research.

Crowd-Sourcing

From the 5th ESRC Research Methods Festival, this video provides an overview of crowdsourcing as well as examples such as TripAdvisor, Wikipedia, KickStarter/ (posted by KF)

Theory
Found through Watch, Know, Learn, this video expands on concepts and literature maps or charts described by Creswell. Personally, I found creating a literature map extremely helpful so a concept map might be as well, especially in deciding how to filter and describe a research topic.

Formulating the research question

The video expounds on the research topic by looking at how to formulate a research question once the research description is complete, giving a visual perspective using  instructive steps and examples.  This video examined what happens when a question is too broad? What should be the step to narrow and focus a question?  Submitted by Dawn Rowe on November 3, 2013.

How to write an A+ thesis statement

The discussion weighs in how to write a strong thesis statement one of the next fundamental steps in the research process. The descriptive blueprint discussed how to narrow a topic, declare an opinion, and support the topic by making a declarative statement. Submitted by Dawn Rowe

Finding research articles

Published by the Olin Library as part of their Research Minutes series, this video describes the difference between academic journal articles and news articles. Especially in regards to education, as it is such a hot topic currently, news articles can be very important in research, but must be substantiated. This video teaches you the clues to make sure the article you choose is a good one. (posted by MB).

Methodological tools for Quantitative research

There are many discussions focused on quantitative versus qualitative data but what does it really mean? The Quantitative versus qualitative video is a summary of the quantitative and qualitative phenomenon. The video looks at the fundamental features of each methodology using the characters of Albert Einstein and Queen Elizabeth as you never seen them before. The topic defines (Q) quantitative and (q) qualitative data, methodological approach, gathering data, and making sense of it all.   Submitted by Dawn Rowe

This video describes the hindrances and limitations of quantitative research. Produced by MMC Learning, it is extremely useful to make sure your quantitative data does not fall into these traps. (posted by MB).

This video explains how to calculate chi-squared statistics. For measures of nominal data, a chi-square helps a researcher determine whether results are significant. (RS)

Components of Qualitative Studies

This video provides a description of different types of qualitative research designs. This is important because a study should be evaluated by how well it implements a specific type of design. Four of the most common types described are phenomenology, grounded theory, action (participant focused research) and ethnography. (RS)

From the 5th ESRC Research Methods Festival, provides a researcher’s perspective on using biographical interviews in qualitative research.  Human stories are important, dynamic, and messy!  (posted by KF).

Brief video that discusses methods in ethnographic research for marketing and consumer research. (posted by KF).

This video explains how cultural probes are used in qualitative contextual design research. It is a “kit”, that includes implements for recording qualitative data, such as a camera, workbook, and diary. Cultural probes are used early in the design of a study, used mostly as a source of inspiration, and to provide context for a study. (RS)
