I chose this video on Don Quixote because of the simplicity in which it was executed. I read Don Quixote in senior year of high school but I never really enjoyed it because I didn’t really understand the basic plot of what was going on. This Thug-Notes video on Don Quixote summarized the plot of the story in a way that was very clear and easy to follow. The graphics and images he chooses to include in the video makes it easy for anyone to picture and have an idea of what is going on in the book as he is talking. In addition to the graphics, the modern language that he uses to present Don Quixote makes it more understandable for a contemporary reader. I find it interesting when he talks about one of the main themes in the play which is deception. He goes on to make the claim that all prose fiction is based off the idea of ‘appearance and reality’ in Don Quixote. One important quote is Don Quixote isn’t able to tell whats going on in his head from reality and that’s what causes the other characters in the book to deceive him easily. While almost everyone he encounters in his travels tell Quixote that chivalry romances are full of lies. Over and over again, Quixote struggles to defend the truthfulness of the stories he loves. The guy in the video touched upon the interesting idea that even though Don Quixote is a story about chivalry and that isn’t reality, we still need stories like this to teach us the values of integrity, loyalty, justice, and persistence. This shows the importance of Don Quixote and the reason as to why it is a popular as it is. He uses the quote “Whatever utility there may be in curing him, it could never match the pleasure he gives with his madness”. I find this quote particularly interesting because how is it that we could get pleasure out of someone that’s crazy? Even though Don Quixote gets criticized throughout the entire book, people still wouldn’t want him to change because of how pleasing it is to make fun of him and get entertainment from his deluded mind.
