One of the first stories I can think of is President Obama’s vow to shut down the Guantanamo Bay Prison. However, the president has failed to do so with help of Congress and the detainees that remain in the prison have chosen to engage in a hunger strike. The military personnel in the prison have taken to force feeding the detainees stating they will not ‘watch prisoners kill themselves’. The hunger strike is a result of the several years detainees have sat in the off the grid prison without being charged of any crime or even receiving a trial. Some detainees still choose to eat with out the force of the U.S. Military while others are force fed through a tube inserted through their nostril.
The 2ND story I have found interesting is the military induced massacre in Nigeria. There appears to be a civil struggle in Nigeria between the Nigerian Military and the rebel group Boko Haram. According the times over 180 village residents where killed when Nigerian military forces engaged the rebel group in combat of the coast of Lake Chad. Residents that survived the massacre said the soldiers would set fire to homes and as the residents would run out they would gun them down, even throwing children back into the flames of the burning homes. Nigerian soldiers claim it was the Boko Haram rebel group that set the fires.
3rd story: John Lui’s mayoral campaign may be at stake after 2 former associates of his were convicted for tampering with campaign finances. Many believe the scandal could cost Lui the mayoral seat, however Lui has chose to continue his run for office although it is believed he was aware of the scheme.

Cyber Attacks are a Two-way Street (Continued)
Although American publications have mentioned the perspectives of the Chinese in their media outlets, the backlash of the Mandiant report and the opinions of the Chinese government is covered more in Chinese publications. The China Daily states that the Chinese government is the victims of cyber espionage; claiming the United States’ allegations show a lack of trust for the Chinese and shows America’s anxiety over national security. Their latest update on the cyber hacking scandal is that US and Chinese officials are trying to make a valid effort to gain trust in each other through open forums most recently held in Beijing. The forums is a combined effort for the U.S. and China to try to solve an international issue.
The Global Times also refutes claims that China is responsible for the cyber hacking, stating the Mandiant report used to make other nations weary of involvement with China. Global times went as far as to state that their systems were attacked 7 Million times.Furthermore, they quoted The People’s Daily, a publication funded by the chinese military, stating that the allegations ‘did not reflect the facts ‘ and were ‘unprofessional’.
The China Buzz is a blog site that stems from the Economic Observer and they too have taken the same view point as the Global Times and China Daily, stating that America is using these allegations to further advance their own cyber espionage. ZDNet.com is a technology based blog that seems to be slightly more neutral than the prior publications. ZDNet states China has teamed up with other nations as a means to better secure themselves from attacks. In addition to teaming up with other countries they would like the negative allegations to stop because they are the victims of cyber attacks and Chinese officials believe the allegations will cause tension between China and other countries. ZDNet states that the U.S. is not entirely innocent and is in 2nd place behind China for cyber espionage in the world, accounting for almost 41% of global cyber attacks.

War; Peterson questions
It is interesting the way you classified the individuals of the navy;
1. Would you say you were one the ‘trouble makers’ from the day you enlisted, or did you become desensitized to the dangers you faced over time?
2. Looking back, would you have done everything the same? Would you still choose to repair the FUDD’s and scopes? Or, would you have chosen a less riskier position?
3. You wrote that you didn’t realize you were suppressing feelings about the war for many years. How have you seen these emotions manifest itself into your daily life?
Cyber Attacks Are A Two-way Street continued….
Cyber hacking between the US and China has been in the news for several weeks; partly due to a 60 page report releases by the Mandiant cyber security company concerning cyber attacks originating from a Chinese military owned building. NBCNews.com chose to focus on the inevitable rise in Mandiant Stock due to their very detailed work., and recommendations from the New York times and Wall Street Journal. Although, hackers tried to undermine the company’s credibility by emailing a tampered version of the report, Mandiant has become a highly demanded cyber security company.
The New York Times has stuck to the perspective that China is solely responsible for the attacks on the US. Dutch Ruppersberger a democratic representative from Maryland stated that US companies lost almost $300 billion in 2012 due to trade secrets stolen from Chinese hacking. The times scarcely gives the Chinese a voice in the article, stating that the US is also responsible for hacking but has yet to provide substantial evidence of cyber espionage.
FoxNews.com reports on the series of cyber attacks between the US and China as a two way street with both nations being involved in cyber hacking. Fox actually portrays China as the victim of cyber warfare, furthermore, stating that China officials are actually ready to have a discussion with US personnel about cyber security. It appears that Fox would like to have an unbiased view on a situation regarding two powerful nations.
Npr.com does not take sides in the argument of who is responsible for the attacks, alternatively they have focused on what precaution and safety measures the US plans on taking to prepare themselves for an attack. The Huffington Post’s articles comes to the defense of the US, stating that Beijing still denies any claims of cyber warfare and states numerous reasons why this threat of cyber warfare should be taken seriously by the American people. Lastly, the Wall Street Journal reports that cyber attacks from China are at an unprecedented scale. The WSJ definitely supports the US and Obama administration for trying to strengthen cyber security policies. Similar to the New York Times, the WSJ servers were attacked by Chinese hackers labeling the Chinese as the aggressors in cyber warfare.

Cyber attacks are a Two-way Street
Technology is constantly evolving, and since the conception of the Internet in the late 1950’s much has been done to benefit billions all over the world. Unfortunately, with most information today being stored in computers and other technological devices, it leaves many open to hacking and cyber attacks. Computer hacking is not something new, however, hackers have now taken their talents of cyber espionage to a grander scale.
On December 21, 2011 FoxNews.com published a story about Chinese hackers who breached the computers of four members of The US Chamber of Commerce. The members dealt closely with policies concerning Asia; they weren’t aware that their systems were attacked. The hackers potentially got away with 6 weeks worth of emails involving over 300 addresses before they were shut down in May of 2010. The Chamber’s Chief Operating Officer David Chavern said, “This was clearly somebody very sophisticated, who knew exactly who we are and who targeted specific people and used sophisticated tools to try to gather intelligence.”
The New York Times recently hired a cyber security company called Mandiant, to investigate a ‘sophisticated Chinese-origin attack’ against its servers. After investigating the attacks Mandiant was able to trace the intrusions to one particular neighborhood in China; this neighborhood is home to a 12-story building that is the base for the People’s Liberation Army unit 61389. The origin of the attacks and the location of the P.L.A.’s base seems to be more than coincidence, leading American intelligence to believe that these attacks are direct assaults from the Chinese government.
After Mandiant submitted their extensive 60-page report on the cyber attacks various news outlets gave their spin on the story. According to NBCNews.com the Chinese military stated that they are actually the victims of cyber warfare. They also stated that two of their sites have been attacked over 144,000 times with two-thirds of the attacks coming from American servers. Hong lei a spokesperson from the Ministry of Foreign affairs labeled Mandiant’s accusations as ‘unprofessional’ and ‘irresponsible’. Chinese officials feel that these accusations do not help to solve the problem of hacking in general.
Cyber hacking is a new method of warfare; hackers can gain access to important systems and undo a country from the inside out. The evolution of technology has made cyber warfare as significant as more direct forms of combat; nations fear that their entire infrastructure can be debilitated by cyber attacks.
