Cyber War James Kelly

Last week, the most interesting stories I read were published in both the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal. Both Published a story about 13 teams working on offensive attacks in the event the United States needs to retaliate to a foreign cyber attack.  Currently, young students are actually being trained in cyber attack defense. Interestingly, I did not see this story mentioned anywhere else.

U.S. China Dailey, as always, gave the Chinese point of view of things. It mentioned John Kerry’s trip to China, and how the Chinese are calling for joint efforts to to create a safe and open cyber space. This source is more defensive of China than the others.

Finally, the Guardian News Blog wrote of China and the U.S. agreeing that North Korea should open peace talks.

War

1) Your essay mostly recalls the horror and negative aspects of the Vietnam War. This made me think of how I have heard many current Military men called their service time as some of the best times of their lives. Do you agree with this at all? Could this possibly be a recruiting tactic?

2) If given the chance, would you ever go back to see Vietnam today?

James Kelly China Hacking

The most interesting article I read about Chinese cyber attacks was a piece in the Wall Street Journal questioning why the United States waited so long to make these attacks publics, as there has been evidence of this happening for a long period of time. It almost seems as if the Chinese does not fear America will do anything about it.

China Daily posted an article about China looking for more cybercooperation, interestingly slanting their story to make China look better than other publications have. China Daily also wrote an article about how it is not a good idea for US and Chinese relations if the US continues to ban Chinese IT systems. Overall, China Daily continues to always give more of a pro-China perspective than the other publications.

While the story about Chinese hacking in the United States received a great amount of play in the media for several weeks, there has been less coverage over the past few days in the Wall Street Journal, London Times, USA China Daily, Fox News, and the CNN News blog.

All five of these publications have recently wrote about China claiming that the US had began cyber attack them first. Unlike the other four news outlets, the London Times had a story calling the hacking between the two countries a “cool war,” calling it a lesser version of the cold war.

Another story that differed from the other publications was a story on USA China Daily giving more in depth information about China’s claims that the USA hacked them first. It’s interesting that the publication with the greater Chinese following gave more of a slant in favor of China than the others.
