So i was strolling down the street the other day, and i was fascinated at the fact that during my little walk, i ran into a few “celebrities”. Your probably wondering if i live in Hollywood,  or am i just another compulsive liar (too many of those these days). Well you know what, i live in New York and i see celebrities everyday,  i mean look at this picture that i took of … Rhianna?

Face it, 99.9% of the world’s pop. are wannabes’. Everyone tries to relate(act, dress, or look alike) to their own idol, “anything that helps us compete for recognition and dominance.” And there is no problem with that, it’s whatever floats your boat, or help you sleep at night. In Virginia Postrel’s “Surface and Substance”, she explains how “surface” and “substance” influence, everyday life. I translate “surface” directly into ‘looks’ and “substance” into ‘personality’, and in this case I definitely say that “surface” plays a greater role than “substance”. When someone subconsciously impersonates their idol, whats the first thing they try to do? Of course to dress like them, this falls under the category of “Looks”. Maybe its because society “judge people, places, and things at least in part by how they look.” In a work interview, the interviewee would probably have a better impression of someone in a more expensive suit opposed to a cheaper one.

“Surface” Vs “Substance”, which do you think is the more influential force?
