This is my thesis for option 2 (Value):
Something the dictionary is missing when it comes to the word value, is a medium of measurement. Yes, value definitely means relative worth, but more specifically, how one determines this relative worth.
I’m having trouble as far as where I’m going with this essay…any ideas on how to structure it?

Your thesis explains your motive to search for how something’s value is determined. Maybe you can elaborate on what you think should be the guideline in determining value. Postrel’s essay of surface versus substance explains her views on this matter pretty much saying that she thinks the functions of a tangible product should determine the true worth. You can disagree or agree with Postrel and use her own arguments for or against her, such as the green pager example. You can say that the value of the pager is determined by the demand of the society. If people want preference, preference will be given, but at a higher price. This is bringing supply & demand into your argument against Postrel’s point of view of functions over aesthetics.

Brian’s advice is great. But, Danielle, I wonder what you mean by “worth”? Are “worth” and value synonyms? What is the difference between them?
