Research Proposal

My proposal is to write a research paper describing the misconception that job descriptions give to a potential employee.  There is the fact that companies describe positions in a very broad way and do not take the time to describe exactly the requirements as being part of that company.  This will be a good topic because it relates to the current outlook on the big business industry, the whole this job doesn’t seem to require much work attitude.

Thesis:  There is a misconception in job descriptions that cause potential employees to form false hopes for their position at the company, assuming the position is going to be fairly simple and have little to no reason to worry about being let go.

Sources: Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America by Barbara Ehrenreich.  i am also going to try to fit “self-reliance” into this by using the element that it is somewhat part of the prospective employee’s job to research about the job.  My last source will be interviews with people who work at Sears at the Cashier and Manager Positions.

i hope to accomplish a want to better understand what a job consists of instead of just reading about it or hearing it from someone.  People applying for jobs need to have a better understanding of what that job requires, the knowledge or level of speed that is needed to be lets say a cashier.  The level of interaction between the cashier and customer is not clearly outlined in the job description even though it is the main purpose that cashiers exist.
